Sacred Heart, Westminster split league doubleheader

OPELOUSAS -- The Sacred Heart basketball teams were only able to cut into their Westminster counterparts with one edge of the sword Tuesday night, as the Lady Trojans took down the Lady Crusaders 39-21 while the Trojans fell 55-43 to the Crusaders.
With the win, the Lady Trojans improve to 11-12 on the year and 3-0 in District 5-1A. Meanwhile, the Trojans fall to 5-19 on the season and 0-2 in league play.
The two teams will host St. Ed’s in district contests tonight starting at 6 p.m.

Sacred Heart (G)
vs. Westminster
From the tip, both team’s offenses had a hard time finding their rhythm, as the lead see-sawed back and forth. Westminster scored on a two-point basket with 12 seconds to go in the period to own an 8-7 lead as the game headed into the second period.
Sacred Heart established themselves on the offensive side of the floor from the beginning ticks of the second quarter clock, scoring the first seven points, including a three-point basket from Amanda Bergeron. By the time the horn sounded to end the first half, the Lady Trojans held a 22-12 advantage.
Sacred Heart widened that lead in the first 3:35 of the third quarter, as they went on a 5-0 run. Westminster tried to get back into the game, but the Lady Trojans closed out the period with the last three points of the period to lead 30-14.
The wild fourth quarter went back and forth, but Sacred Heart never let the Lady Crusaders within 14 points, as they closed out the win.
Lafleur led all Lady Trojans with 10 points.

vs. Westminster
In the opening quarter, Westminster began with all the momentum, taking an 11-4 lead after the first 5:34 of the first quarter. Sacred Heart battled their way back, knocking down six of the next 10 points to trail by three, 13-10.
With two seconds to go in the period Sacred Heart’s Chase Tate sank a shot and hit the bonus free throw, after being fouled, to tie the game at 13-13 heading into the second quarter.
The following quarter remained tight throughout, with Westminster pulling away slightly and taking a 29-23 lead into the locker room.
Westminster began the third quarter by hitting two free throws. However, the Trojans battled their way back, scoring the next seven points to trail by three, 33-30, with 3:50 remaining in the quarter.
From that point on it was all Crusaders. With Sacred Heart going cold from the floor and Westminster ramping up the defense, the Crusaders finished off the game by out scoring the Trojans 22-13 over the final quarter and a half.
