Mamou takes on Iota with one last chance to get into the Class 3A postseason

For the Mamou Demon senior class, Friday night’s home contest against the Iota Bulldogs may be their last chance of getting into the playoffs in their career.
Game time for the District 5-3A showdown is set for 7 p.m.
As of press time, Mamou (4-5, 2-2) rested in the No. 41 spot of the latest LHSAA power ranking. The Demons must reach the No. 32 spot if they hope to continue their journey that has brought them four wins thus far.
But, even a win against Iota may not be enough for Mamou to slip into the post-season. With such a high number of teams to jump, the Demons may also need the help of the other programs on their schedule to give them the power points required to reach their goal.
“First of all, we have to win this game,” stated Mamou head coach Dwight Collins. “We are at home for this one and we are going to have opportunities in the game to make it happen. We just have to take advantage of those opportunities when they present themselves and not make the mental mistakes that has hampered us in our previous game this season.”
Last week, Mamou fell to a Church Point squad that has already clinched at least a share of the District 5-3A title. In that game, the Demons let a one point first quarter lead slip away in a 43-15 loss to the Bears.
“We had a lot of mental breakdowns in that game against Church Point,” said Collins. “I thought our front seven did a decent job, but we just did not do a good enough job in the secondary. We are going to have to make sure of our zones in coverage and we are going to have to do a better job of tackling this week.”
Iota enters the game with an overall record of 7-2 and a district record of 2-2. After starting off 5-0, the Bulldogs are 2-2 over their past four games.
Iota averages 29.8 points per game on offense and gives up only 12.1 points per game on defense. However, in their two losses, the Bulldogs have only scored 21 total points and surrendered 43 total points.
“If we want to play another game, we are going to have to make sure that we practice like it,” commented Collins. “Everyone has to be on the same page when it comes to the game plan. One of the keys this week is going to be our offensive line. Those guys will have to make sure they block the front seven first and not try to get to the next level to fast.”
