Mamou seeking first points of the year as they face Port Barre

PORT BARRE -- It has been a struggle on the offensive side of the ball for the Mamou Green Demons in 2018.
After three games, the Demons have not been able to put up any points and consequently are 0-3 on the season.
Mamou will try to rectify that tomorrow night, as they travel down 190 to face off against the Port Barre Red Devils in the first district game of the season for both teams. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
“We have had opportunities to make plays all season long but just have not been able to capitalize on those opportunities,” stated Mamou head coach Dwight Collins. “We cannot continue to let those chances slip away. I believe if we can put together a good drive at the beginning of the game and finally put some points up, the players will relax and find their rhythm.”
Even though the offense was unable to get things going last week in their 27-0 loss to St. Ed’s, the defense played tough, holding the Blue Jays to only seven points in the first half and 261 yards of total offense.
“I thought our defense played well last week,” said Collins. “We were actually able to limit them in the first half. Our guys played their assignments perfectly and it paid off. Unfortunately, our offense could not muster any first downs and that kept our defense on the field way too long. They eventually wore us out.”
That defense will be needed to continue making plays this week in order to hold back a much improved Red Devil squad. Port Barre comes in with an overall record of 1-2 and gave a very good Opelousas Catholic squad a game in an 18-13 loss last week.
“Looking at them on film, I can see that they have gotten better in all phases of the game,” commented Collins. “You don’t see the mistakes that they made last year. They like to mix it up on offense, running the ball about 60 percent of the time. Their quarterback is their best player and they want the ball in his hands as much as possible.”
“Defensively, they are solid,” Collins continued. “They fly to the ball and use their athleticism to make you make mistakes. It will be a challenge for us this week. We are just looking for the light bulb to come on offensively and get comfortable in what we are trying to accomplish.”
