MAMOU – Celebrating their first game on the newly renovated gymnasium floor, the Mamou Demons (4-8) and Lady Demons (4-5) scored back-to-back wins over the Rosepine Eagles and Lady Eagles here Tuesday night.
The Lady Demons battled their way back to claim a 35-32 win, while the Demons steamrolled past the Eagles 62-35. Both teams will be back in action on Monday as they host Rapides High School.
In the girl’s contest, the Lady Demons and the Lady Eagles both started off slowly on the offensive side of the court. With the game tied at 5-5 at the 3:05 mark, Mamou went on a six point run over the next 45 seconds, including a three-point shot from Ungel Lazard, to give the Lady Demons an 11-5 lead. The remainder of the first quarter stayed pretty even between the two teams, as Mamou closed out the period owning a 13-9 lead.
The second quarter belonged to the Lady Eagles. After the two clubs exchanged baskets to begin the period, Rosepine busted out for an 8-0 run to put the Lady Eagles up by four, 19-15, as the teams headed into the locker room.
Mamou battled back in the opening part of the third quarter, even taking a 22-19 lead over Rosepine at the 4:54 mark when Brianna Thibodaux drained a three-point shot. The lead changed hands several times throughout the period, until the Lady Eagles knocked down a three-pointer with one second left on the clock to take a 28-25 lead. Rosepine finished the quarter with a 5-0 run over the last 1:22.
Undeterred, the Lady Demons found their groove in the final period, over taking the Lady Eagles 31-30 at the 4:25 mark on a three-point basket by Thibodaux. Down the stretch, it was just a matter of making free throws and Mamou did what was necessary, hitting four of six from the line to secure the win.
Dacia Richard led the way for the Lady Demons with 10 points. Thibodaux followed with nine points.
In the boy’s game that ensued, the Demons and the Eagles followed a similar first quarter pattern that befell the previous contest. Tied at 5-5 with 2:18 left in the period, Mamou’s Mason Tinley dropped hit a two-point basket that gave the Demons a short-lived lead. However, Rosepine finished out the quarter with a 4-1 mini run to own a 9-8 advantage as the horn sounded to end the period.
Increasing the defensive pressure to start the second quarter, Mamou created a number of turnovers resulting in easy lay-ups and several trips to the charity stripe. By
