Mamou earns win over Church Point in district contest

MAMOU -- Dacia Richard surrendered only two runs on five hits and struck out six in a complete game win, as the Mamou Lady Demons rolled past the Church Point Lady Bears 12-2 in a District 5-3A contest Thursday afternoon.
With the win, Mamou improves to 2-1 on the season and 2-0 in district play. The Lady Demons were scheduled to participate in the Tioga tournament Friday and Saturday.
After holding Church Point to only a single in the top of the first inning, Mamou collected two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the early lead. A one out single by Emily Soileau put a runner at first base.
Soileau reached second on a passed ball and reached home plate on a single off of the bat of Taylor Douget, who was promptly thrown out at second trying to steal. Richard followed with a single of her own.
Richard moved to third on a single from Tierane Thomas and came home on a single from Angel Menier. Thomas was caught trying to take third base for the final out.
The Lady Bears were blanked in the top of the second, allowing the Lady Demons a chance to pick up three more runs in the bottom half of the inning. Sydney Bruney single dwith one out to lead things off for Mamou.
Bruney moved to second on a fielder’s choice and scored when Madi Fontenot doubled off of the center field wall with two outs. Soileau singled home Fontenot, and later scored after a stolen base and an error.
The third and fourth innings were very quiet for both teams, as neither club could push a run across the plate. However, the Lady Demons got back on track in the bottom of the fifth, adding two more runs to take a 7-0 lead.
A lead off walk issued to Soileau was followed by a single from Douget. Soileau scored on the ensuing at bat; a single from Richard.
Richard’s courtesy runner left early, leaving Douget at second with one out. After a fly ball to shortstop, Menier tripled, plating Douget for the second run of the inning.
Church Point finally got on the board in the top of the sixth, as the Lady Bears drew a walk and belted a two-run home run to cut the Lady Demon lead down to 7-2.
Mamou closed out the game in the bottom of the sixth, picking up five more runs to run-rule the Lady Bears. Bruney reached on an error to start the at bat off for the Lady Demons.
Bruneys’ pinch runner stole second base but had to stay put on a ground ball out to the shortstop. Fontenot promptly singled home the pinch runner and stole second base.
Fontenot came to the plate on a single from Soileau. On the next at bat, Douget singled and the Church Point center fielder made an error, putting runners at second and third.
Richard tripled in Fontenot and Soileau. Richard received a courtesy runner who then crossed home on a single from Thomas to close out the game.
