MAMOU -- The Mamou Demons and Lady Demons had no luck hosting the Iota Bulldogs and Lady Dogs, as both Mamou teams dropped district games to their opposition Tuesday night.
The Lady Demons fought hard throughout the contest but still lost a tough 53-25 game against the Lady Dogs.
The Demons trailed 28-16 at the half, but mounted a furious charge in the final two quarters only to fall two points short 48-46.
The Lady Demons fall to 6-20 on the season and 0-7 in district play. Mamou will travel to Notre Dame tonight for a non-district match-up.
The Demons drop to 7-22 on the season with their loss and 2-3 in district competition. They will also travel to Notre Dame tonight in a non-district affair.
The Lady Demons had a rough time right from the start. The Lady Dogs’ physicality overwhelmed Mamou from minute one. Combining that with efficient rebounding, Iota managed to earn a 15-8 lead at the end of the first period.
Both teams attempted to step up their defenses in the second period, but Iota’s defense was far more superior, limiting Mamou to just three total scores. Mamou’s inefficient shooting was starting to become apparent, while Iota focused on strengthening their lead. At the end of the first half, the Lady Dogs earned themselves a 30-16 advantage.
Things were definitely out of hand for the Lady Demons, who couldn’t score more than four goals in any one quarter. That rang true in the third period, where yet again Mamou was limited to just six points in total, and just two goals in the fourth period.
Iota’s lead was so insurmountable that the Lady Dogs came in with their backup players at the start of the second half, benching all of their starting players after a job well done.
Things also started off very shaky for the Demons. The Bulldog’s impressive passing seemed to be throwing off the Demons. Mamou also struggled with their shooting , but still managed to stay somewhat close on the scoreboard. At the end of the first period, Iota held a 9-5 lead.
The Bulldogs pumped the gas in the second period, lighting up the scoreboard over and over again. The Demons were unable to keep up, which lead to a sizeable 12 point deficit, 28-16 for the Demons, as the two teams headed to their locker rooms.
Mamou was still in a bad spot at the beginning of the third period, and the game looked to be nearly wrapped up. The Demons refused to quit though, and in the final three minutes, Mamou pumped out seven unanswered points to drop the Iota lead to 40-35 heading into the final quarter.
Mamou opened up quickly, setting the score at 42-40 with 6:35 left in the game. Iota was able to match all of Mamou’s scores, however, keeping the game in the Bulldog’s favor. With just ten seconds left, the score sat at 48-46. The Demons tried for one last flurry, but were stuffed, ending the night in disappointment for Mamou.
