MAMOU - The Mamou Demons did not have the homecoming that they hoped for, as they fell 37-0 to the Iota Bulldogs Friday night.
The Demons fall to 0-5 on the season and Iota improves to 5-0 on the season.
Iota’s Trae Rambin had quite a game for himself, racking up 130 yards passing, 50 yards rushing, and three touchdown passes.
When asked how he felt to beat Mamou on their homecoming night, Iota head coach Josh Andrus was calm in his response.
“A win is a win, regardless of the night, it always feels good to win a ball game and stay undefeated.”
“We had our opportunities and we let them slip away,” said Mamou head coach Dwight Collins after the game. “We have a very young group and they work hard, we just need them to work harder.”
The game started with Mamou deferring the ball to Iota in the first quarter. It didn’t take long for Iota to take advantage of their initial drive.
After a couple of short runs, the Bulldogs looked to get the ball rolling right away. Facing a third and 15 on their own 44-yard line, Rambin launched a long pass to Tyrone Charlot, who hauled the ball all the way to the Demon 12 yard-line.
The next play, Luke Doucet ran it in to give Iota their first touchdown of the game. After Luis Doreto tacked on the extra point, the Bulldogs found themselves up 7-0 with 8:55 left in the first quarter.
As Mamou got the ball back, it was up to themselves to answer Iota. Unfortunately that was not the case as the Demons shot themselves in the foot, earning three penalties in a row, bringing them back to their own three-yard line.
Running into even more bad luck, Mamou’s quarterback Bernard O’neail was sacked in the end zone by Dakota Breaux, earning the Bulldogs a safety, putting them up 9-0 with 8:00 left in the quarter.
Receiving the ball back after the free kick, Iota did not waste any time getting back on the board, scoring in just two plays. This time it was a 23-yard bullet from Rambin to Chaynery Johnson. Doreto kicked the extra point, and the Demons found themselves down 16-0 with 7:18 left in the first.
Things started to heat up once again as the game transitioned into the second quarter. As the quarter began, Mamou found themselves facing a second and long on their own 21-yard line.
On the next play, O’neail dropped back to pass looking for wide out Dino Deshotel, however the ball was picked off by Andrew Ashby who brought it all the way back to the Demon five-yard line, giving the Bulldogs yet another opportunity to score.
Once again, Iota scored in just three plays, with Luke Doucet barreling it in from the Mamou three- yard line. The extra point off the foot of Doreto was good, putting the Bulldogs up 23-0 with 10:44 left in the second quarter.
After a quick four and out by the Demons, Iota found themselves with the ball on the Mamou 46 yard-line. And like clockwork, they scored again, this time in six plays.
Facing a second and long, Rambin pitched it to Charlot, who raced it in from 24 yards out for the touchdown. Doreto launched it in for the extra point and Iota now led 30-0 with 6:55 left before the half.
Things didn’t pick back up until late in the third quarter. After a 10 play drive from the Bulldogs, starting at the Demon 32 yard-line, Iota faced a fourth and goal from the Mamou two yard-line. Charlot earned himself a hat trick, rushing it in to pick up his third and the Bulldog’s fifth touchdown of the game. Doreto kicked the extra point, improving Iota’s lead to 37-0 with just 2:07 left in the third quarter.
Neither team could get much going in the fourth quarter, as the game concluded with Iota finding themselves on top in dominating fashion
