Mamou blows past Port Barre; remains unbeaten in district

MAMOU -- The Mamou Lady Demons collected 10 hits, six of those for extra bases, in their 11-0 blanking of the Port Barre Lady Red Devils Thursday afternoon.
The district win improves Mamou’s overall record to 6-2. The victory over Port Barre also keeps the Lady Demons undefeated in league play at 4-0.
Mamou was scheduled to play in the Sulphur Tournament this past weekend. The Lady Demons then return to district play on Tuesday at Iota.
The Lady Demons got the scoring started in the bottom of the first inning. Madi Fontenot doubled to lead things off and reached third on a passed ball.
Emily Soileau singled home Fontenot and made it to second base on a single from Taylor Douget. A fielder’s choice moved the runners up to second and third.
Tierane Thomas grounded to first base, allowing Soileau to reach home. Angel Menier then singled to plate Hannah Israel, who had come in to courtesy run for Douget. That run made it a 3-0 lead in favor of Mamou.
The Lady Demons failed to tally any runs in the bottom of the second. However, Dacia Richard gave Mamou a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning when she blasted a ball over the wall.
That lead would be extended by one more run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Lead off hitter Sydney Bruney reached first base on an error. Teralyn Fontenot, pinch running for Bruney, was able to steal second base.
A fielder’s choice off of the bat of Sophia Fritz allowed Fontenot to reach third base. Madi Fontenot followed with a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Teralyn Fontenot.
The Lady Demons went up 6-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning when they were able to scrape across a single run.
With two outs, Thomas doubled to set things up. Thomas reached third on a passed ball and then came home to score on a double from Menier.
The big inning for Mamou came in the bottom of the sixth. Bruney led off with a single and reached second on a passed ball. Fritz drew a walk and both runners advanced a base on another passed ball.
Madi Fontenot pushed Bruney and Fritz across the plate when she tripled. Fontenot got to home on a single off of the bat of Soileau.
After a fly ball out, Richard connected on her second home run of the game, this time a two-run blast, to put Mamou up 11-0 and end the game in run-rule fashion.
Richard led all Lady Demon hitters, going 2 for 4 with two dingers and three RBI. Madi Fontenot was 2 for 3 with a double and a triple and two RBI. Emily Soileau went 2 for 4 with an RBI.
Richard pitched six scoreless innings, allowing only two hits while striking out 10.
