BATON ROUGE -- The No. 6 LSU Tigers get their first real test of the season when they travel to Austin to battle the No. 9 Texas Longhorns. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
No offense to the Georgia Southern Eagles, LSU’s week one opponent, but the Tigers’ 55-3 winning feast was just an appetizer to what lies ahead in Austin.
The most impressive part of LSU’s dismantling of Georgia Southern had to be the fact that the Tigers never lost focus the entire game. Many of the past LSU teams would have played around and have been satisfied with a 24-10 win.
But not these Tigers. No, no, no!!! These Tigers were ready to make a statement to the rest of the NCAA that this year’s version was a team to be reckoned with.
Think about this, LSU’s new spangled offense went on to score on eight of their first nine possessions, including seven touchdowns, with the majority of those using up only two and a half minutes or less of drive time.
But, for as much publicity that the offense got after the game, it was the defense that quietly put the thud on the Eagles. The Tiger defense demoralized a Georgia Southern offense that was supposed to be one of the hardest to stop in the country.
Yet, LSU clipped the Eagles wings and held them to only 98 total yards. Now that is domination!!
So, now that the Tigers have made their presence known, they must now tackle a Texas team that will be hungry to tame the beast that rolled out onto the playing surface of Death Valley Saturday night.
The Longhorns were very impressive in their 45-14 win over the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs. Texas is led by third year starting quarterback Sam Ehlinger. The veteran signal caller passed for 276 yards and four touchdowns against Louisiana Tech.
Ehlinger’s prime target is 6’6” wide out Collin Johnson. He caught 68 catches for 985 yards and seven touchdowns last season and hauled in four passes for 59 yards and a touchdown agasint the Bulldogs.
Keaontay Ingram is the main threat on the ground. The returning back is looking to build off his 2018 campaign that saw him rush 142 times for 708 yards and three touchdowns. Ingram ran the ball 11 times for 78 yards and a touchdown against Louisiana Tech.
Defensively, Texas sports two Bronko Nagurski Trophy candidates, safeties Brandon Jones and Caden Sterns. The Longhorns are 9-7-1 all time against LSU and 191-91-9 against the SEC.
