Sacred Heart boys, girls fall to Bunkie on Tuesday

BUNKIE – Both the Sacred Heart boys and girls basketball teams each limped out of the Bunkie gymnasium with claw marks as the Panthers and Lady Panthers took two game non-district sweep from the Trojans and Lady Trojans Tuesday night.
In girl’s action, Sacred Heart let a one point deficit at the end of three quarters play turn into a 47-40 loss at the hands of the Lady Panthers. In the second game of the night, the Panthers wasted no time in jumping out to a commanding eight point lead after one quarter of play to cruise to a 64-31 win over the Trojans.
With the loss, the Lady Trojans fall to 7-10 on the season. Meanwhile, the Trojans drop to 5-13 on the year with their defeat at the hands of Bunkie. Both Sacred Heart teams return to action tomorrow night as they host Opelousas Catholic in a district contest.
Here is a rundown of the two games played Tuesday.

Sacred Heart
vs. Bunkie (G)
The first eight minutes of play did not see much offense produced by either team. Sacred Heart jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first 3:42 of play. However, the Lady Panthers inched their way back into the game, tying the game up at 6-6 as the first quarter came to a close.
The Lady Trojans pushed past Bunkie 10-8 at the 5:35 mark of the second quarter, only to have the Lady Panthers go on an 8-1 run over the next 4:08 of the period.
Sacred Heart willed their way back into the game and only trailed 19-15 when the first half buzzer sounded.
The opening minutes of the third quarter belonged to the Lady Trojans. Over the first two minutes of the period, Sacred Heart knocked down three buckets in a row to take a 21-19 lead.
The teams traded baskets over the final six minutes of the period, as Bunkie fought their way to a 28-27 lead at the end of the third quarter.
The final period was all Lady Panthers, as they slowly worked themselves to a nine point lead with 1:31 to go in the game. From that point on, it was just a matter of maintaining the lead and picking up the win.
Blaire Lafleur scored 14 points to lead the Lady Trojans, while Ava Shiver pitched in 12 points for Sacred Heart.

vs. Bunkie (B)
A three-point basket from Jacques Leger to open the game gave the Trojans an early lead over the Panthers. But, from that point on, Bunkie turned up the heat defensively and offensively, reeling of a 17-6 run to own an eight point advantage as the first quarter came to an end.
The second quarter began where the first period ended, with Bunkie dominating play. After the first 2:33 of the second quarter, the Panthers had extended their lead to 26-9.
Sacred Heart showed some fight midway through the period, reaching the 14 point barrier at the 1:05 mark. However, Bunkie continued to shoot the ball well and held a 32-14 lead heading into the locker room.
The final two periods trended the same way as the first two, with the Panthers controlling play on the floor.
