PORT BARRE -- The Pine Prairie Lady Panthers torched the Port Barre Lady Red Devils with 17 hits in a 19-8 win Tuesday afternoon.
Pine Prairie improves to 10-9 on the year and 4-2 in District 5-3A with the win. The Lady Panthers travel to Mamou for a showdown with the Lady Demons today at 5:30 p.m.
Pine Prairie wasted no time, jumping out to a 2-1 lead after one inning of play. After a scoreless second inning, the Lady Panthers picked up four more runs in the top of the third.
Those runs were much needed, as Port Barre struck for three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to make it a 6-4 game.
Pine Prairie added a run in the top of the fourth when Brianna Wall went yard for the second time in the game. But, it was the top of the fifth that put the game away for the Lady Panthers.
In that inning, Pine Prairie slashed out seven hits and 12 runs to basically put away Port Barre. The Lady Panthers batted around in the half inning, with Allie Fontenot and Jacie McFarlain each belting pitches over the outfield wall.
The Lady Red Devils scored four more runs in the bottom of the fifth, but it was not enough to overcome the huge deficit.
Wall, Fontenot and Maycie Hardy all had three hits to lead Pine Prairie. McFarlain and Wall both knocked in five RBI. Abbie Fontenot and Asia George were 2 for 4.
