MAMOU -- The Mamou Lady Demons broke a 2-2 tie after four innings to play, scoring 10 runs over the last two at bats to earn a 11-2 win over the Port Barre Lady Red Devils in the first round of the LHSAA Class 3A playoffs.
With the win, Mamou moves to 18-8 on the year. The Lady Demons will host No. 10 ranked Sterlington High School in the regional round of the post-season. Game time and date had not been set as of Thursday’s press deadline.
Port Barre collected the first run of the game in their first at bat. With one out, Hailey Martinez singled and stole second base. One out later, Caitlyn Lanclos singled home Martinez to give the Lady Red Devils a 1-0 lead.
That lead would stay until Mamou jumped ahead in the bottom of the third inning. Sydney Bruney homered to cut the Port Barre lead down to one.
Angel Menier followed that up with a double to center field. A sacrifice fly to left field off of the bat of Emily Soileau allowed Menier to move to third base. Madi Fontenot singled, plating Menier and put the Lady Demons up by one run.
The Lady Red Devils knotted the game back up in the top of the fourth inning. Grace Chelette singled to lead off the inning. Two outs later, Malchi Francis doubled down the left field line, pushing Chelette across the plate to make it a 2-2 game.
Mamou could not put up any points in the bottom half of the fourth inning, but they also did not allow Port Barre to score any runs in the top of the fifth either. The Lady Demons broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth, driving in two more runs.
With one out, Soileau walked. Fontenot doubled to right field scoring Soileau all the way from first base.
A sacrifice fly by Dacia Richard moved Fontenot to third base. A single from Taylor Douget resulted in Fontenot crossing home plate, putting the score at 4-2 in favor of Mamou.
In the ensuing at bat for Port Barre, Lady Demon hurler Richard and the Mamou defense shut down the Lady Red Devils, keeping the two run edge in tact.
Finally, in the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Demons put the distance needed to finish off Port Barre. In the at bat, Mamou pushed seven runs across to make it impossible for a late Lady Red Devil comeback.
Sophia Fritz reached first with one out when she was hit by a pitch. Bruney singled, putting runners at first and second.
Angel Menier drew the one out walk to load the bases. A single off of the bat of Soileau scored Fritz and kept the bases juiced.
Fontenot belted a double to center field, plating Bruney and Menier and put runners at second and third. Richard followed with a single to push Soileau and Fontenot across the plate.
Douget blasted a two-run shot over the wall for the final two runs of the game.
Richard finalized the game in the top of the seventh inning, sending all three Port Barre batters back to the dugout with strike outs.
Fontenot went 3 for 4 at the plate with two doubles and two runs scored to lead the Lady Demons. Douget was 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBI, while Bruney was also 2 for 4 with a dinger, one RBI and one run scored.
