BATON ROUGE - The LSU Tiger baseball season began the season this past weekend with a series against Indiana at Alex Box Stadium and have an Evangeline Parish connection to come out of the bullpen in the closer role.
Devin Fontenot, whose father is from Basile and who still has family in the area, earned his first save of the season in Game 1 of a doubleheader Saturday against the Hoosiers.
He entered the game in the 8th inning with LSU leading 7-3.
“Devin struggled a little bit in the 8th inning, but, in the 9th inning, I thought he looked pretty good,” said head coach Paul Mainieri. “That’s Devin. You gotta take the good with the bad. It’s not always the prettiest thing. Some days he just dominates. As I’ve said many times, the job of the closer is to get the last out before the tying run or the winning run crosses the plate. More often than not Devin has done that for us in his career.”
Mainieri added, “It’s the first outing for him and the first outing for a lot of guys. I think they’ll continue to get better as we move through the season.”
In his two innings of work, Fontenot allowed one earned run on three hits. He struck out two batters and allowed one walk.
