Sacred Heart sweeps St. Ed’s on the hard court

VILLE PLATTE – Hungry for a win, the Sacred Heart Trojans and Lady Trojans filled their bellies full as they feasted on the Blue Jays of St. Ed’s here Wednesday night to pick up a pair of hard-earned victories.
In the opening game of the doubleheader, the Lady Trojans (3-6) stayed on the hunt the entire game until they were able to finally get the open shot to take down the Lady Jays 45-41 in overtime win. The nightcap saw the Trojans (3-8) complete the feast by cooking up a 55-30 win over St. Ed’s.
In the girl’s contest, Sacred Heart found themselves in a 6-2 deficit with 2:42 to go in the opening quarter. The Lady Trojans fought their way back when Blair Lafleur hit on a single free throw and a two-point basket over the next 1:17.
The two teams picked up the pace on the offensive side of the ball, exchanging buckets in the last 1:13 of the period. By the time the buzzer sounded to end the quarter, St. Ed’s owned a 12-9 lead.
Made free throws by Anna Parrott and Lafleur cut the Lady Jays’ lead down to one as the second quarter began. However, St. Ed’s found some more offense to bring the lead up to four, 15-11, at the 3:49 mark.
The Lady Jays continued to stay one step ahead of Sacred Heart, keeping their four point advantage up until the one minute mark. A three-point basket by Lauren Shipp allowed Sacred Heart to cut the St. Ed’s lead down to one, 19-18, with 34 seconds to go. But, the Lady Jays held firm and even extended their advantage to three points, 24-21 as the half came to a close.
A quick basket to start the third quarter put St. Ed’s up by five. The Lady Trojans cut that down to two just 16 seconds later when Olivia Hernandez burned the nets with a three-point basket. Sacred Heart tied the game at 26-26 a minute later on a basket by Parrott.
The game continued to stay tight throughout the period, with the Lady Jays opening up a five point lead, 34-29, with 1:18 to go in the quarter. The Lady Trojans fought their way back, cutting the lead down to one point, 34-33, on a three-point play by Jenna McFarlin and a two-point basket by Anna Beth Briley as time ran down in the period.
