Practice time is over and now the real work begins for the Ville Platte Dixie Youth Majors and Minors All-Star teams as both clubs will take part in their respective East Sub-District tournaments this weekend.
The Majors will head to Pine Prairie for their first action of the season and head coach John Pitre is excited to see his team perform.
“Things are looking good right now,” stated Pitre. “I have 12 kids that can play baseball right now. Probably seven or eight of these guys can play multiple positions. Right now we are working nine pitchers. Defensively and on the mound, we will definitely be solid. Our weakest area will be hitting, but that is coming around,”
“This weekend my focus will be on seeing what our pitchers have,” Pitre continued. “If we can come out of this throwing some strikes, that is what I want to see. There are a couple of positions that I may put some players in just to see if they can handle it. I know these players well, and I pretty much know where they can play. Other, than that we won’t have a lot of surprises. This will be a typical Ville Platte team.”
The Majors will begin play on Friday take on Oakdale at 7:30 p.m. The All-Stars will continue play on Saturday with a game against host Pine Prairie at 7:30 p.m. and then will conclude sub-district play on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. when they face off against a strong Mamou team.
The Minors travel to Oakdale for their sub-district tournament. Ville Platte opens play today with a 7:30 p.m. game against Vernon. They continue play on Friday with a contest against Pine Prairie. That game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
The All-Stars then play two contests on Saturday. First, Ville Platte will tangle with Oakdale at 1 p.m. then battle with Mamou at 5 p.m.
The tournament concludes for the All-Stars on Sunday as they finish with a contest against Oberlin at 1 p.m.
