SULPHUR -- The quest to become champions of the Jennie Finch World Series began in earnest for the Diamond Divas, a travel team based out of Ville Platte.
The Divas opened up with pool play games here on Wednesday and concluded those pool games on Friday afternoon, going 2-2 over those three days.
As of press time, the Divas were awaiting their placement in the double elimination bracket that was scheduled to begin on Saturday. The Gazette will have the results of those bracket games in Thursday’s edition.
On Wednesday, the Divas garnered their first win of the tournament, taking down the Centex Buzz 3-1.
In that game, the Divas scored all three runs in the top of the first and held on the rest of the way to secure the win.
Game two saw the Divas battle Nightmare Gold and come away with a nail-biting 1-0 victory. The only run of the game came in the bottom of the first, as the Divas’ Jodie Landry scored on a single from Ava Johnson. Each team could only muster three hits apiece in the contest.
On Friday, the Divas were only able to manage a single hit in a 2-0 loss to the Louisiana 007’s. The Divas did threaten twice in the game, placing a runner at third base in the second and third innings, but could not get those runners across.
The final pool game for the Divas came on Friday afternoon, as they fell two runs short in a 4-2 loss to the GT Shockers.
The Shockers posted all four of their runs in the top of the first inning in that game.
