Ville Platte motors through Mamou in league tilts

VILLE PLATTE -- The Ville Platte High basketball teams collected some much needed power points Friday night as they motored past the Mamou Demons and Lady Demons in District 5-3A contests.
The Lady Bulldogs shook off an early deficit and roared back to claim a 47-38 win over the Lady Demons in the first game of the doubleheader.
With the win, Ville Platte improved to 14-12 overall and 4-4 in district play. The Lady Bulldogs host Iota tomorrow night.
The loss dropped the Lady Demons to 7-19 on the year and 0-8 in league competition. Mamou will travel to Pine Prairie on Monday.
In the boys’ game, Ville Platte turned on the jets in the middle of the first quarter and never looked back as they ran past Mamou 73-43.
The Bulldogs move to 19-10 on the season and 5-1 in district. Ville Platte will also host Iota tomorrow.
The Demons fell to 7-23 on the year and 2-4 in league play. Mamou also travels to Pine Prairie tomorrow evening.

It was the Lady Demons that got off to the fast start in the opening contest of the night. Brianna Thibodeaux knocked down a three-pointer, and Dacia Richard connected on a basket in the paint to give the Lady Demons a 5-1 lead after just one minute of play gone by.
Ville Platte snuck back into the game, putting up seven of the next 10 points, including a three-point basket from Trinity Leday, to tie the game up at 8-8 with 2:23 to go in the first period.
A three-point bucket from Markaysha Johnson, her second of the quarter, and a basket from Thibodeaux in the last 1:30 of the period put Mamou on top 13-8 as the teams headed into the second quarter.
Unfazed by the Lady Demon lead, the Lady Bulldogs began the second quarter by scoring the first eight points to go up by three 16-13. Mamou tied the game up again, 16-16, at the 3:40 mark of the period and, after a back and forth exchange of baskets, took over the lead by three, 21-18, with 1:36 left in the first half.
However, Ville Platte scrapped their way to two baskets before the horn sounded to end the period, giving them a 22-21 advantage as the teams headed into the locker room.
The Lady Bulldogs extended the lead to 27-23 in the first 2:15 of the third quarter. Behind Kylie Rider’s two three-point baskets over the next minute and change, the Lady Demons moved past Ville Platte, 29-27.
Sensing the momentum shifting toward Mamou, Ville Platte turned up the heat on defense and capitalized on some Lady Demon miscues. By the time the horn sounded to end the third quarter, the Lady Bulldogs owned a 10 point edge, 39-29.
Ville Platte stretched its advantage to 14 points in the first two minutes of the final quarter. But, Mamou was not going to go away easily. Over the next 3:30, the Lady Demons cut the Lady Bulldog advantage down to six points, 43-37.
The run by Mamou turned out to be to little, too late. In the final 1:30 of the game, Ville Platte picked up four more points and kept the ball out of the Lady Demons hands to seal the win.
Kaydan Coward and Leday each scored 15 points to lead the Lady Bulldogs in scoring. Johnson collected 10 points for Mamou in the loss.

Kyrien Green and Trevon Gallow put the Demons on their back for the first 2:45 of the first quarter, as they helped Mamou tie the game up at six apiece.
Undaunted by the great start by the Demons, Ville Platte poured in the final 12 points of the period, including two baskets each from Davonte Robert and Tye’Wuan Byers, to open up an 18-6 lead heading into the second quarter.
Tauj Roy stroked a three-point basket for the Bulldogs to begin the ensuing period. From there, Ville Platte went on a 14-4 run, giving the Bulldogs a 32-10 lead with 3:17 left to go before half. Mamou did manage to cut the advantage down to 18 before the horn sounded to send the teams into the locker room.
Quarter numbers belonged to the Bulldogs completely. Ville Platte held the Demons to only seven points in the period while at the same time putting up basket after basket off of Demon turnovers. By the time the quarter had ended, the Bulldogs held a 59-25 advantage.
With the game in hand, Ville Platte emptied their bench in the fourth and final period, as they cruised for the win.
Tye’Wuan Byers put up 16 points to lead the Bulldogs, while Roberts added 11 points. Green tallied 16 points for Mamou.
