LAKE CHARLES -- The Sacred Heart baseball team mounted a late charge against perennial Class 5A power house Barbe High Thursday that fell just a little too short, as the Trojans dropped a heartbreaking 7-4 loss to the Buccaneers.
Sacred Heart drops to 6-6-1 on the season with the loss. The Trojans were scheduled to finish play in the Barbe tournament on Friday and yesterday before hosting the Hicks Pirates tomorrow.
Sacred Heart threatened early in the contest, putting runners at second and third with no outs. However, the Trojans came up empty after the early charge.
Barbe responded by collecting three runs in the bottom of the first. Carter Quinn singled and stole second and third base.
Bryce Larocca tripled home Quinn and crossed home plate on the very next at bat when Brody Drost belted a two-run home run over the right-center field wall.
Both teams went scoreless in the second inning. Sacred Heart cut into the Buccaneer lead in the top of the third, scoring a single run.
Drew Bordelon drew a lead off walk and stole second base. After a strike out, Garrett Fontenot singled, moving Bordelon to third base. Bordelon reached home when Fontenot was thrown out at second on an attempted steal.
The fourth inning belonged to Barbe. The Buccaneers extended their lead to 4-1 when they were able to scratch home a solo run.
Kyle Debarge walked and reached second on an error of off the bat of Brayden Corley. Debarge then promptly stole third base, which allowed Corley to reach second base.
A single by Damon Fountain brought home Debarge, putting the Buccaneers up by three runs.
Sacred Heart failed to tally in the top of the fourth inning. Nevertherless, Barbe added to their lead, plating three more runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Quinn singled to lead off the inning. A fly ball to center field recorded the first out of the at bat. Drost singled, giving the Buccaneers runners at first and second.
Following another fly ball out, Debarge singled to load the bases. Corley doubled, bringing Quinn and Drost to the plate. Ben Davis followed that with a single, plating Corley for the third run of the inning.
With Barbe holding a six run lead, the Trojans needed some type of offense to get back into the game. That offense did not come until the bottom of the seventh inning.
Alec Gotro walked to lead off the inning. An error off of the bat of Nick Perry allowed Gotro to move to second base and gave Sacred Heart runners at first and second with no outs.
After a strike out for the first out of the at bat, Bordelon singled home Gotro and pushed Perry to third base. Wesley Launey promptly singled, plating Perry for the second run of the inning and moved Bordelon to second base.
An error with Fontenot at the plate loaded the bases for the Trojans. Harper grounded out to the third baseman to get Bordelon across and put runners at second and third. But, a strike out ended the threat and the game.
Bordelon was 1 for 2 at the plate to lead Sacred Heart. Both Launey and Harper were 1 for 3 with an RBI.
Bordelon picked up the loss on the hill, pitching four complete innings, giving up three earned runs on four hits while striking out one and walking one.
