OBERLIN -- The No. 7 Basile Bearcats opened up a 21 point lead in the first quarter en route to a 41-22 win over the No. 8 Oberlin Tigers Friday night.
With the win, Basile moved to 6-2 on the season and 4-1 in district play. The Bearcats will host Grand Lake this Friday night in another league contest.
Basile struck three times in the first quarter alone. Early on in the period Isaiah Ceasar punched it in from five yards out to put the Bearcats up. Abdul Mlingo kicked the extra point and Basile took a 7-0 lead.
Not long after their first score, the Bearcats were back at it. But, instead of the offense putting up the points, it was the special teams that got into the act.
Logan David blocked an Oberlin punt and scooped it up for a 20 yard touchdown. Mlingo tacked on the extra point and extended the Basile lead to 14-0.
The final points of the first quarter for the Bearcats came late in the period when Jaylon Thomas hauled in a 25 yard pass from Dawson Ashford. Once again, Mlingo was true on the extra point and Basile now owned a 21-0 lead.
Oberlin finally got on the board early in the second quarter. A 35 yard pass from Levi Pelloquin to Jared Joubert allowed the Tigers their first points of the game. Joubert added the point after, cutting the Bearcat lead down to 21-7.
However, Basile would not flinch. Later in the period, Ceasar would slip in from four yards out for the touchdown. The extra point failed and the Bearcats held a 27-6 lead heading into the locker room.
Basile came out in the third quarter and picked up from where they left off, scoring twice in the period. The first touchdown came on a seven yard run from Ceasar, while the second touchdown came off of a 12 yard rumble from Jay Pitre.
Mlingo was true on both extra points, extending the Bearcat lead to 41-6 as the third quarter came to a close.
Oberlin finished the night with two scores of their own in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough to upend Basile.
Ceasar finished the night with 88 yards on 11 carries and three touchdowns. Andre Reed added 57 yards on six rushes.
