With their 42-21 shoot out win over Hamilton Christian this past Friday night, the Basile Bearcats have evened their overall record to 2-2 on the season; something that is not lost on head coach Kevin Bertrand.
“That win was very important for us, not only because of the power points but also because it gives our players some huge confidence heading into the rest of the season,” stated Bertrand. “Being 2-2 is a whole lot different than being 1-3 at this point in the year. Now we just have to take that confidence and move it forward to the next game.”
That next game will be a tough challenge for the Bearcats, as they travel to Grand Lake to take on the Hornets in their second district game of the season. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
Grand Lake comes into the game with an overall record of 4-0 and a district record of 1-0. The Hornets defeated Merryville 46-20 this past Friday night; the second week in row that Grand Lake has put up 40 or more points.
“They are a good, solid football team,” said Bertrand. “If you look at their record and the number of points they have been able to put up on the board, you can tell they are well coached and have some momentum going their way. Last time we went there, we did not take them seriously and almost came away with a loss. We cannot make that mistake again.”
Against Hamilton Christian, the Bearcats put up some big numbers offensively, collecting 423 total yards on the night. Most of those yards came in the running game, as Basile torched the Crusaders for 304 yards on the ground.
The trio of Izzy Drehemsis, Logan David and Isaiah Ceasar found holes in the Hamilton Christian defense and took full advantage. Drehemsis finished the night with 98 yards, while David collected 87 yards and Ceasar gathered 79 yards.
“Offensively, I thought we played exceptionally well,” commented Bertrand. “We were more balanced than we have ever been this season. Our offensive line did a tremendous job clearing space for our running backs. That will be a big key for us tomorrow.”
