BASILE -- The Basile Bearcats scrimmaged against the DeQuincy Tigers Thursday night to warm up for the ensuing season. Both teams showed some promise and despite losing a majority of their top senior players last year, the Bearcats looked as if they’ll continue their success in the coming season.
Basile head coach Kevin Bertrand was excited to get back into the new season and see what his relatively young lineup has to offer. “It’s always great to start a new season, you start to miss the sounds and the atmosphere of the games,’ stated Bertrand “The opportunities that come with a new season are endless.”
The game started off rather slow as both teams looked rather rusty. As the game went on, the Bearcats started to make numerous mistakes defensively, and the Tigers quickly capitalized, scoring on the third drive of the game.
As the game progressed, DeQuincy showed to be the physically stronger team, which gave the green Basile roster much trouble. Basile continued to look rough, missing countless tackles on defense and getting virtually nothing going offensively.
Fortunately for the Bearcats, Logan Guillory was able to breathe new life into the team halfway through the game, as he single-handedly kept a late drive alive, capping it off with a touchdown catch.
He continued to be a huge factor in the game for Basile scoring another touchdown towards the end of the scrimmage.
When asked to comment on Guillory’s performance, Coach Bertrand said “He’s one of those guys who can do it all, and we ask a lot of him. For him to step up for these young players is great to see.”
The Bearcats new starting quarterback Cole Manuel played a few drives and look impressive, boasting multiple 30 plus yard passes, showing that the Bearcat passing offensive hasn’t missed a beat in the off season.
The second half of the scrimmage was a complete opposite to the first half, as each team battled back and forth scoring one after the other. The “field-rust” and nerves had obviously been shaven for both teams, with both teams giving each other everything they had.
Overall, Basile and DeQuincy had great performances and have high hopes for both of these teams in the coming season.
