Basile secures 29-13 win over Merryville

MERRYVILLE -- The Basile Bearcats racked up 389 yards of total offense to secure a 29-13 District 4-1A win over the Merryville Panthers here Friday night.
With the win, Basile improves to 3-2 on the season and 1-1 in district play. The Bearcats will travel to Creole to take on the South Cameron Tarpons Thursday night.
Basile opened up the scoring in the first quarter when Abdul Mlingo booted a 26-yard field goal to give the Bearcats a 3-0 lead.
Merryville returned the favor on the ensuing kickoff, as Stefon Williams returned the ball back 95 yards for the score. The extra point was good, giving the Panthers a 7-3 lead.
Basile answered back before the end of the period. Quarterback Dawson Ashford rambled in from three yards out for the score. Mlingo added the extra point to put the Bearcats up 10-7.
Basile basically put the game away in the second quarter, scoring twice in the period. The first touchdown came on a Jay Pitre 18 yard pass from Ashford and the second came on a 51 yard run by Logan David. One of the kicks failed, however, the Bearcats now owned a 23-7 lead.
Merryville pulled within ten late in the second quarter as John Hopper blasted his way in from three yards out. The kick was no good, putting the score at 23-13 as the teams headed into the locker room.
Basile finished out the scoring on the night in the fourth quarter when Ashfor scrambled his way from 23 yards out. The extra point kick failed, but the Bearcats had sealed the game with the final touchdown.
