The Basile Bearcats got a win this week without having to snap the ball one time.
The Bearcats (3-2, 1-1) were supposed to travel down to the marshes of Cameron parish tonight to take on South Cameron High School, but the Tarpons were unable to field a team because of a number of injuries.
The tiny school down in Creole has had trouble in the past with numbers when it comes to the gridiron. The Tarpons listed only 21 players on the squad to start the 2018 season.
“They really only had about 17 or 18 that dressed out,” stated Basile head coach Kevin Bertrand. “The coach called me and told me that there were just too many injuries to be able to put a competitive team on the field this week. I know they have eighth graders on the roster as well.”
“This gives us a chance to work on ourselves the rest of the week,” he continued. “We need to work on some things that you cannot work on during the course of the year. It allows us to get back to basics and prepare ourselves for Elton next week.”
Basile got back on the winning track this past week, blowing by the Merryville Panthers 29-13. The Bearcats re-gained a since of themselves against the Panthers rushing for 350 yards and holding Merryville to one offensive touchdown.
“After the loss to St. Ed’s, we needed to re-assert ourselves both offensively and defensively,” said Bertrand. “And, I thought we did just that. We were way more aggressive, especially up front. Hopefully we continue to do that come next week and the weeks to follow.”
