GRAND LAKE -- Heading into their second district game of the year, the Basile Bearcats knew that a road trip to Grand Lake to take on the undefeated Hornets was not going to be an easy task.
Little did Basile know, but that task was a little too substantial to overcome, as the Bearcats fell 28-13 to the Hornets Friday night.
With the loss, Basile dropped to 2-3 on the year and 1-1 in district play. The Bearcats will Elton to take on the Indians in the annual Battle of Bayou Nezpiques this Friday night.
The first quarter of the game belonged to Grand Lake, as the Hornets were able to put up two scores in the initial period.
The first score was a 38-yard touchdown pass from Brayden Richard to Luke McArdle. Kade Billot tacked on the extra point to give Grand Lake an early 7-0 lead.
The Hornets turned around and picked up another touchdown later in the period when Cyler Little hauled in a 15-yard pass from Richard. Billiot was true on the extra point, and, when the first quarter came to an end, Grand Lake owned a 14-0 lead.
However, Basile did not go away because of the early deficit. The Bearcats moved the ball down the field and picked up their first points of the game with a two yard run from Isaiah Ceasar. The extra point was good off of the foot of Jose Palacios, cutting the Grand Lake lead down to 14-7.
The Hornets responded rather quickly. Mid-way through the second quarter, Richard and McArdle hooked up once again, this time from 32 yards out to extend the Grand Lake lead. Billiot knocked the extra point through once more and the Hornets now held a 21-7 lead.
Basile did not relinquish the game to the Hornets despite the two touchdown deficit. Before the half could come to an end, the Bearcats were able to add one more score to their total.
This time it was Logan David’s turn to take the ball into the end zone, when he powered his way in from eight yards out. The extra point try was blocked, making it a 21-13 game as the two teams headed into the locker room.
The second half did not see much action in the way of scoring, especially from the Bearcats. The only points to be added to the scoreboard were notched by Grand Lake in the fourth and final quarter.
Logan Granger did the honors for the Hornets, racing into the end zone from 55 yards out. Billiot smacked the ball through the uprights giving Grand Lake the 28-13 lead and the game.
Ceasar led all Bearcat rushers with 117 yards on 16 carries. Izzy Drehemsis added another 101 yards on nine rushes.
