HOUSTON -- The Houston Astros are at it again.
Despite their Friday night loss to the Kansas City Royals, Houston is flying high again in the American League. And, as of Friday, the Astros own a 50-27 record, the second to most wins in all of Major League Baseball, one game behind the Boston Red Sox.
Houston also owns the third highest winning percentage, .682, in all of baseball. One of the main reasons for the Astros’ surge to the top of the league was their 12 game win streak, the longest in franchise history, that ended just this past Tuesday.
Consider the fact that Houston was a mediocre 37-25 before the streak and one can see that they have since recaptured the grit and determination that helped them capture the World Series title just a year ago.
Leading the way once again for Houston is Jose Altuve. The second baseman is on top of the hitting charts for the Astros, batting .347 on the season thus far with 29 hits for extra bases, including 20 doubles.
Right-fielder George Springer leads the team with 15 home runs and has driven in 42 runs on the year. Former LSU Tiger Alex Bregman is currently hitting .268 with 11 home runs and is tied for second on the team with 42 RBI.
While on the winning streak, Houston manager AJ Hinch put everything into perspective for his club.
““I don’t think it matters while you’re doing it,” he said. “History is for looking back. We’re not ready to look back even to yesterday.”
“It’s nice when you put things in perspective over time, and we’ll recognize what a championship was like last year or what some of these streaks are like this year or what a rotation we have,” he continued. “I don’t want to rush to judge history until I’m old and realize exactly what it means. I want to stay present in the moment and not obsess over what we’re doing. Just continue. I refuse to put it into context until I have to.”
After finishing out the series with the Royals today, the Astros will host the Toronto Blue Jays for a three game series starting tomorrow.
