WASHINGTON, DC -- Houston Astro teammates Alex Bregman and George Springer each hit solo home runs in the top of the tenth inning to help the American League clinch their sixth MLB All-Star game in a row, as the Junior Circuit defeated the National League 8-6 in ten innings here Tuesday night.
Bregman and Spinger’s homers were only two of the 10 combined dingers on the night, destroying the previous record of six that had last been reached in 1971 by some gentlemen named Johnny Bench, Hank Aaron, Reggie Jackson, Frank Robinson, Harmon Killebrew and Roberto Clemente
“I took a cutter down the middle of the first pitch and kind of went into battle mode and just was trying to put a line drive in play, and it left the yard it,” said Bregman. “It was crazy. It was a lot of fun.”
Leading 5-3 heading into the bottom of the ninth, the American League seemed as though they were going to put away their National League rivals in regulation. However, the Senior Circuit would tie the game up on a two-run homer by Cincinnati Reds’ second baseman Scooter Gennett.
The American League found the scoreboard first when Yankee outfielder Aaron Judge homered to center field in the top of the second, putting his team up 1-0. The American League doubled that lead the following inning on a solo home run off of the bat of the Anaheim Angels’ Mike Trout.
The National League cut the lead in half in the bottom half of the third on a Willson Contreras’ (Chicago Cubs) line drive home run to left field. That score would remain the same until the National League tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh, as Colorado Rockies’ Trevor Story blasted a ball over the left field fence.
The American League picked up three big runs in the top of the eighth on Jean Segura’s (Seattle Mariners) three run bomb to center field, but could not hold on to that advantage as the National League scored one run in the bottom of the eighth and those two game tying runs in the ninth.
Cincinnati’s Joey Votto tried to keep things interesting in the bottom of the tenth, as he sent a solo shot over the right-center field wall, but it was not enough to overcome the American League lead.
