Looking Back: Recalling events of March 1952

Today, we take a look back to March 1952.
•Court Street was asphalted through a project with the Louisiana Department of Highways.
•Bobby Soileau, a student at Sacred Heart High School, won the Class AAA state boxing championship for the third time.
•Cleco opened an office in Mamou to handle account payments. The office was managed by Mrs. J. Linda Dupuis.
•Two cars of the Chicago-Rock Island Rail Road were stranded between Mamou and Reddell due to a wreck caused by rotten cross line that tore up the track and derailed five freight cars.
•A.G. LaHaye of Ville Platte represented the Grand Coteau Ridge Soil Conservation District at the national meeting held in Cleveland, Ohio.
•Lieutenant-Colonel Kirby Guillory, son of Mrs. Bea Guillory of Ville Platte, was presented the Bronze Star medal for his outstanding achievements with the U.S. Military Advisory Group to the Republic of Korea.
•Mrs. Ozema Fontenot received a trans-Pacific radio phone call from her son, Wesley Fontenot, who was stationed at Camp Hakata in Japan. She said, “Phones are certainly a blessing. His voice was very clear and natural as he thanked his wife, Evelyn, and his sister for the box of candy he had just received.”
•Sale items at Exchange Market included: Creole Belle Coffee (70 cents per pound), Conco soap (six for 27 cents), veal cutlets (89 cents per pound), tomatoes (22 cents per pound) and quart of Blue Plate peanut butter (73 cents)
•Popular songs of March 1952 included: “Let Old Mother Nature Have Her Way,” by Carl Smith; “Cry,” by Johnnie Ray and The Four Lads; “Wheel of Fortune,” by Kay Starr; “Lover,” by Peggy Lee; and “Zing a Little Zong,” by The Andrew Sisters.
•Popular movies released in March 1952 included: “The Red Badge of Courage,” starring Bill Mouldin and Audie Murphy; “Hong Kong,” starring Ronald Reagan and Rhonda Fleming; and “Meet Danny Wilson,” starring Frank Sinatra and Shelley Winters.
