Emma Rose McElwee was crowned Queen Cotton LXX during the 70th Annual Queen Cotton Coronation held Saturday afternoon, September 21, at the Northside Civic Center.
McElwee, the daughter of Archie and Melissa McElwee of Many, is a 2021 graduate of Many High School, where she achieved the honors of being named class valedictorian and student body president. She is currently a senior at Northwestern State University of Louisiana in Natchitoches, where she is pursing a bachelor’s degree in history with a minor in social sciences. Upon her graduation in December, she plans to pursue a career as a history teacher.
In addition to graduating as her high school class valedictorian, McElwee has earned several other honors throughout high school and college, including Sabine Parish Rising Star, Sabine Parish Senior Student of the Year, Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizenship Award, Northwestern State Greek New Member of the Year, Northwestern State Outstanding Panhellenic Leader of the Year and Phi Mu Fraternity Woman of the Year.
Her accomplishments include becoming certified to conduct workshops in risk management for collegiate organizations and leading recruitment efforts to double the size of her sorority chapter in one semester through developing a multi-faceted recruitment plan.
The new Queen Cotton’s hobbies include needlepoint, reading, visiting Louisiana historical sites, volunteering with the Children’s Miracle Network hospitals and going on adventures with her three sisters.
As Queen Cotton LXX, McElwee hopes to utilize her passion to create larger exposure for both the Louisiana cotton industry and the festival, as it is important to her to elevate the platform of Louisiana cotton farmers and their relevance in today’s agriculture.
In addition to McElwee being crowned Queen Cotton LXX, Don Molino was crowned King Cotton LXX. Colonel Cotton Joel Manuel and Grand Parade Marshal Darion Arvie were also presented during the pageant festivities, as well as Heritage Manor La Reine Mary “Sylvia” Veillon and Le Roi Clanis Freeman.
