This week, we take a look back 75 years ago to March 6, 1947.
•There was an increase in the number of individuals needing public aid in Evangeline Parish. Numbers showed an increase between December 1945 ($18,914.25) and December 1946 ($26,289.91), an increase of $7,735.66, according to the Parish Welfare Director Richard T. Eastin. The reason for this, Eastin noted, was the number of people receiving assistance had increased. Also, the state appropriations and federal matching of the state funds had also increased, making it possible to more adequately meet the needs of the individuals receiving assistance.
•Ville Platte High School students sent several packages of clothing to the needy of Europe at Christmas time, and a reply was received from a school child in Finland. The letter, published in The Gazette as written, read: “Good Friend! I got thinks which you sent to us and I’ll thank you. I cannot send nothing to you but the letter tells how happy we voere. I cannot write this letter but my teacher knows little English and she helps me. I am very pleased and at last I hope all good to yoll. With love to you! Tapio Turenen II ans Knopioon Laani, Krusjarnvikk, Finland (Suomi).”
•A carnival held at Chataignier High School was very popular, with a large crowd in attendance to watch as Miss Eloise Dupre, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Dupre, was crowned “Miss Home Economics 1947” at the school’s gymnasium.
•A large group of 40 high-grade beef, pork and dairy animals were on display at the new car barn located behind Bus Station in Ville Platte, for the joint FFA/4-H livestock show.
•Seven Evangeline Parish students registered to attend Northwestern State College for the spring semester. Those students were: Sybil E. Fontenot of Mamou, Hansel Janet of St. Landry, and Ethel Allen, Donald Fontenot, Jacqueline Olivier, Sue Thompson, and Beverly Veillon, all of Ville Platte.
•Weekend sale items at G. Ardoin’s included: bacon (66 cents per pound), five large cans of milk for 65 cents, three-pound can of Luzianne Coffee for 97 cents, head of lettuce (12 cents each), and red perch fish fillets (50 cents per pound).
•Movies showing in Ville Platte included: “Magnificent Doll,” starring Ginger Rogers and David Niven, “Pilgrim Lady,” starring Lynne Robert and Warren Douglas, and “My Pal Trigger,” starring Roy Rogers and Dale Evans.
•Popular songs of March 1947 included: “Open the Door, Richard,” by Count Basie and His Orchestra, “(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons,” by The King Cole Trio, “Heartaches,” by Ted Weems and His Orchestra with Elmo Tanner, “Near You,” by Francis Craig, and “Anniversary Song,” by Al Jolson.
