Dear Editor, The COVID-19 pandemic has cast a bright light on the need to educate the public with facts to ensure that people can take the right measures to increase their chances of health and longevity. More than 570,000 lives have been lost – an unimaginable number.

At the Library

Summer Reading is going to be a blast! In addition to all of the fun kids will have at all of the libraries in Evangeline Parish this June, we are going to have the Bar None Ranch Pony & Petting Zoo on site at the following locations with lots of animals to pet and a saddled horse for rides! The first location is Wednesday, June 9, at Ville Platte Main library from 2 to 4 p.m.; Tuesday, June 15, at the Turkey Creek Branch from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.; and then the Mamou Branch from 2 to 4 p.m.; and the last location on Thursday, June 24, at the Basile Branch library from 10 a.m. to noon. So, if you can’t make it to one location, please visit one of the others. The calendar and all related summer reading information is posted on our website: www.evangelinelibraryorg.

VILLE PLATTE – Funeral services were held at an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Ville Platte on Saturday, May 22, 2021, for Verna G. Fontenot, 89, who passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family.

Eunice Players’ Theatre returns

The Eunice Players’ Theatre is scheduling the first production of its 51st season in June after more than a year of its stage going dark due to the COVID-19 shutdown. The last production of its 50th season was in November 2019, said Gabe Ortego, president of the group that’s been staging shows since 1969.

EPSB recognizes top student athletes

Two Mamou High School power lifter champions and the recipient of several sports scholarships were recognized by the Evangeline Parish School Board at the May 20 meeting. Taylor Castille, a senior at Mamou High, has been a part of the power lifting team for four years. Since she first started the sport, she increased her totals by over 200 pounds. Last year she broke the regional dead lifting record by lifting 385 pounds and was slated to win state before the season ended. She ranked first in her weight class through all the divisions in the state.

EPSO Arrests

The Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Office reported the following recent bookings into the parish jail. Arrested were the following persons: • John Shannon Deville II, 27, Mamou, was arrested on May 19, 2021, by the Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Office for possession of CDS II with intent to distribute and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Minister’s Corner: The Church as God’s community

The Church is a community of God. If we are to learn to grow, then it is crucial that we unlearn the things of the world that prevent us from becoming the people God has called us to be. Romans 12:3 KJV says, “For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.”

Everyone is at risk of being scammed now. The recent ransomware attack on Colonial Pipeline was a wakeup call for everyone in America.

Jazzin’ up the joint

If you’re out and about and suddenly find yourself hungry for beignets, it might be because you’ve encountered the new sound hitting the parish. The Evangeline Parish Jazz Ensemble, which began in 2020 but was put on hold for a year because of the pandemic, has begun performing the Crescent City sound. The ensemble was created by Clinton Jones, Jimi Bergeron, and John Havard, and features students from several schools in Evangeline Parish.
