The Eunice Players’ Theatre is scheduling the first production of its 51st season in June after more than a year of its stage going dark due to the COVID-19 shutdown. The last production of its 50th season was in November 2019, said Gabe Ortego, president of the group that’s been staging shows since 1969.

Minister’s Corner: The Church as God’s community

The Church is a community of God. If we are to learn to grow, then it is crucial that we unlearn the things of the world that prevent us from becoming the people God has called us to be. Romans 12:3 KJV says, “For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.”

Fighting off cyberscammers

Everyone is at risk of being scammed now. The recent ransomware attack on Colonial Pipeline was a wakeup call for everyone in America.

C’est Vrai: Sugar for the stills left little for coffee

When south Louisiana men were hauled into court during Prohibition and accused of making moonshine whiskey at least a handful of them seemed genuinely surprised to find out that the mess of tubes and barrels discovered in their cabins was actually a still.

Jazzin’ up the joint

If you’re out and about and suddenly find yourself hungry for beignets, it might be because you’ve encountered the new sound hitting the parish. The Evangeline Parish Jazz Ensemble, which began in 2020 but was put on hold for a year because of the pandemic, has begun performing the Crescent City sound. The ensemble was created by Clinton Jones, Jimi Bergeron, and John Havard, and features students from several schools in Evangeline Parish.

To my graduating senior, who made me a senior

Dear eldest and most expensive daughter, Well, the time has finally come for you to graduate from high school, spread your wings and discover exciting, new ways to spend my cash in college. It seems like only yesterday that you were first hinting to your parents (especially me) that you were really the one in charge and that you just planned to humor us for the next 18 years.

Why the failure to condemn Hamas?

If you’re the sort of person who sees no difference between the Israeli military defending its citizens and Hamas terrorizing civilians, you might want to pass on this column. This column is for the sort of person who realizes that violence is horrible, that killing civilians is horrific, that politics is dirty and that the world is not designed for the peacemakers.

Big challenges for new LSU president

Louisiana State University, located in my hometown of Baton Rouge, takes on a new president in the coming weeks. And to say that he has a big job ahead of him is an understatement. Educationally, the state’s largest university is a mixed bag of quality and mediocrity, typical of many public universities. And there’s nothing like being in Tiger Stadium on a football Saturday night. But when it comes to national rankings, and raising money for its endowment, LSU continues to be at the low-end, even among schools in the Southeast Conference.
