Trump leads; Cassidy and Johnson win re-election

As of press time on Wednesday, November 4, the outcome of the presidential election between President Donald Trump and Democratic challenger Joe Biden was yet to be decided.
The Pelican State, however, went solidly in the Republican column as President Trump carried Louisiana with his 1,255,481 votes which was good for 58% of the vote. Biden received 855,597 votes which was good enough for 40%. The other 1% of the vote went to the Libertarian ticket of Jo Jorgensen and Jeremy Cohen who received 21,636. Statewide, the unofficial turnout was 69.4%
President Trump easily carried Evangeline Parish with 72% of the vote (11,053 votes). Biden garnered 4,158 votes in the parish for 27%, and the other 1% went to the Libertarians. The unofficial turnout was a fraction of a tick higher than across the state at 69.9%.
Incumbent United States Senator Bill Cassidy warded off the crowded field of challengers as the Republican physician from Baton Rouge won re-election with 59% of the vote with his 1,228,661 votes. His closest challenger was Shreveport Mayor Adrian Perkins who received 393,866 votes for 19%.
Evangeline Parish went to Cassidy with 10,374 votes for 72%. Perkins accounted for 1,418 votes for 10%, and fellow Democrat Derrick “Champ” Edwards received 9% with his 1,307 votes in the parish.
Also winning re-election was United States Representative Mike Johnson for the 4th Congressional District of Louisiana. Across the district, the Republican from Bossier Parish received 60% of the vote which translated into 185,174 votes. His closest challenger was Democrat Kenny Houston with 78,063 votes which was good enough for 25%.
Congressman Johnson handily won Evangeline Parish by receiving 70% of the vote with his 9,534 votes. Houston was next in line with his 2,424 votes which was good enough for 18%.
In other Louisiana Congressional elections, United States Minority Whip Republican Steve Scalise won re-election in District 1 with 72%, Democrat Cedric Richmond won re-election in District 2 with 64%, Republican Clay Higgins won a third term as representative of District 3 with his 68%, and Republican Garret Graves also won re-election in District 6 with 71%.
The open race in District 5 to replace outgoing Republican Ralph Abraham resulted in a runoff election to be held between Republicans Luke Letlow and Lance Harris.
