According to the Gospel of Mark, Christ commanded his disciples, before He ascended into Heaven, to “go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every living creature.”
This act of spreading the good news has become known as evangelization and comes in many forms even to this day as a local Sacred Heart School employee uses custom made crafts to deliver Christ to others.
Yvette Buller, technology director at Sacred Heart Schools, explained her craft projects began as a Christmas present idea in 2015 as she was looking for door blessings.
“I was Christmas shopping and saw a door blessing, but they weren’t pretty,” she said. “They looked like plain strung beads and had nothing decorative about them. I thought I could make that and do it nice.”
Buller went on to explain what is a door blessing. “A door blessing is a beaded door hanger that a person hangs on the door knob,” she said. “ I thought about a little prayer card I had about Jesus blessing your home and inviting Him in whenever you open the door. If you have it on the door, then you will think of Him every time you open the door and go through it People buy them, get them blessed, and hang them on their door.”
The door blessings began as a gift for family members. Buller then made 20 of them for her to sell to other school employees. She sold all 20 and saw how the project was turning into something successful.
“I started making some more and went meet Charmaine Eastin at Susan’s on Court,” Buller said. “She wanted to sell the door blessings in her store. Then, one day at that time, she called and asked if I could make a pretty holy water bottle because the only ones she had were little and plain. People just didn’t really want them.”
Following that conversation, Buller began searching for different bottles at flea markets. “I went to a flea market and found some bottles,” she said. “I went home with them and found some rectangular shaped cameo trays and put a picture of a guardian angel on them. I glued it on the bottle, and the end product was so beautiful.”
She continued, “About three or four weeks later, Charmaine texted me and said she only had one left. She wanted me to make some more. It took off like that, and it became a passion of mine.”
Buller continues to make and sell her door blessings and holy water bottles in different locations across South Louisiana. As her endeavor goes on, she remains humble and gives all the glory to God.
“Everything I do is all just a gift from God because I don’t have an artistic bone in my body,” she said. “When I sit down with that stuff, it just starts coming together, and I look at it and just say ‘Wow!’”
The door blessings and holy water bottles allow Buller to express herself in a variety of different styles, but more importantly, they also are bringing herself that much closer to Christ.
“It’s made me want to be more spiritual and more pious. With more prayer and more adoration, He’s bringing me closer to Him so that I can hopefully bring people closer with my merchandise.”
