District Attorney Trent Brignac, whose office is charged with providing legal advice to the parish governing body, has the following comments in regards to Monday, May 4th’s police jury meeting.
“We 100 percent support our local businesses and completely sympathize with those owners, employers, and employees, who have been financially crippled by these limitations placed upon them by the State of Louisiana. While we believe these businesses should be able to open their doors in a safe manner with measures that do not put anyone at an unreasonable risk (especially in a parish such as Evangeline which has a very low positive rate and only one death), we must nonetheless advise the jury and these businesses with the best legal information under the circumstances.”
“We could actually harm these businesses even more if we suggested their reopening against the governor’s orders. For example, if a beautician, restaurant, or bar were misguided by our legal advice only to be fined or have their license suspended by the state licensing board, we would have done them more harm than good.”
“We continue to support all Evangeline Parish businesses and look forward to a quick reopening of our economy for the benefit of all owners, employers, employees, and others who have been impacted buy this unfortunate situation.”
