With members of his family at this side and Evangeline Parish Clerk of Court Randy Deshotel, the son of the late Dr. Bobbie Deshotel, officiating, James Nicholas Chaumont was sworn in on Wednesday, June 17, as Member of the School Board, District 2, for Evangeline Parish.
“I’d like to give a special thanks to the Deshotel family for acknowledging me to do this,” Chaumont said.
The Evangeline Parish School Board appointed Chaumont to the position earlier this month at the request of Dr. Deshotel’s wife, Joella. If the school board would not have appointed a replacement within 20 days, then Governor John Bel Edwards would have made an appointment to fill the vacancy.
“It’s a privilege to follow Dr. Bobbie Deshotel,” Chaumont added. “Fifty-one years of service is a tremendous feat. I’m just glad to try to be in his shoes and do things for the community. He has set a great example and did a lot of funding for this community. I’m kind of just riding along, but I want to continue what he’s paved for us.”
Chaumont ended his remarks by acknowledging the members of the school board and staff along with the principals of Basile High School and W.W. Stewart Elementary Tony Bertrand and Danielle Young.
He concluded, “Thanks to my family for sticking by me. I don’t think I could do this without them. I don’t want to do this without them. I appreciate that, and that means a lot.”
Chaumont will remain on the school board representing the Basile area until an election is held on November 3.
