Looking Back: Recalling events of July 2005

Today, we take a look back to July 2005.
•The Turkey Creek Branch of the Evangeline Parish Library opened.
•Discussions were underway for between Pine Prairie Energy Center and Industrial Development Board regarding the new center.
•Joseph S. Fontenot, son of Joseph Oswald Fontenot, graduated from the Air Force Non-commissioned Officer Academy.
•Greg Lafleur, son of Gervis and Lena Lafleur of Ville Platte, was named as athletic director for Southern University, replacing Floyd Kerr. Greg was a graduate of Ville Platte High School, and played football for LSU and in the NFL.
•The new location of the Ville Platte Wal Mart held a grand opening and was open on a 24-hour schedule.
•Taylor Ardoin, son of Dr. Greg Ardoin, signed to play baseball at Arkansas University while following in his dad’s footsteps to study pre-med.
•The Jungle Dinner Club celebrated 52 years in operation on July 30.
•Frank Jennings authored a book titled “Bull Gumbo for the Soul” about his experience working in the stockyards of south central Louisiana for 46 years.
•Local artist Waven Boone began working on his mural on Main Street. The artwork, titled “The Spirit of Ville Platte,” featured five arched panels that were 10 feet high by eight feet wide. Each panel depicted a scene of famous Ville Platte attractions, including the Tournoi and Chicot State Park.
•The new Tournoi royalty was crowned in July. They were: Louisiana Tournoi Queen Jennie Olcsvary, daughter of Douglas and Stephanie Olcsvary of Moss Bluff; Teen Tournoi Queen Leigh Anne Phillips, daughter of Brian Phillips and Linda McMillan of Sulphur; and Jr. Tournoi Queen Meghan Peen, daughter of Bucky Penn and Monique Doyle of Grand Prairie.
•Sale items at Champagne’s included red seedless grapes (99 cents per pound), five-pound bag of Shurfine rice (99 cents), stuffed and seasoned Boston butt ($2.49 per pound) and six-pack of 12 ounce cans of Coke products (4 for $5).
•Sale items at Brown’s Furniture included a hand-tied, all over leather three-piece living room set ($1,488); and five-piece wood and iron dinette set with a slate top ($498).
•Popular songs of July 2005 included: “Incomplete,” by the Backstreet Boys; “Breathe (2AM) by Anna Nalick; “As Good As I Once Was,” by Toby Keith; “Mississippi Girl,” by Faith Hill’ and “Sugar, We’re Goin Down,” by Fall Out Boy.
•Popular movies released in July 2005 included: “Fantastic Four,” starring Ioan Gruffudd and Jessica Alba; “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” starring Johnny Depp and Freddie Highmore; “Wedding Crashers,” starring Owen Wilson and Isla Fisher; “Hustle and Flow,” starring Taraji P. Henson and Ludacris; and “The Island,” starring Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson.
