Looking Back: Recalling events of January 1993

This week, we take a look back at the events of January 1993.
•Arbor Day served as the kick off for the Village of Pine Prairie’s “Trees for the Village” beautification project.
•A farewell reception was held for Sacred Heart Pastor Msgr. Mike Jarrell, who served from 1984-1993. He was appointed as the second bishop for the Houma-Thibodaux Diocese. His installation as bishop was set for March 4, 1993, at St. Frances DeSales Cathedral in Houma.
•Retired Third Circuit Court of Appeals Judge J. Burton Foret was appointed as the first executive counsel of the Office of Risk Management by Governor Edwin Edwards.
•Randel Chapman was elected as president of Evangeline Bank and Trust beginning January 1, 1993. He took the place of retiring Jack C. Fruge Sr. Chapman was the seventh president of the 86-year-old bank.
•Katie Smith, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Smith of Vidrine, was named president of the Junior Brangus Breeders Association. Kayra Soileau, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Soileau of Vidrine, was crowned Miss Louisiana Brangus Queen.
•Ernie Deloack was named Mamou Volunteer Fireman of the Year.
•Robin Deshotels, a student at Vidrine High School, and Danny Ardoin, a 1992 graduate of Sacred Heart, were announced as the top parish athletes for 1992.
•Taylor Michelle Ortego, daughter of Lynn and Sue Ortego of Ville Platte, was born January 4, 1993, and was the first baby born in the new year at Humana Hospital in Ville Platte.
•Evangeline Parish Tax Assessor Weber Lee “Bee” Deshotels was sworn in for a seventh term in office by Evangeline Parish Clerk of Court Walter Lee.
•Dr. Hosea “Joey” Soileau, president of the Ville Platte Rotary Club, helped to organize a drive to collect discarded Christmas trees for use in controlling coastal erosion. The project was under the supervision of Dr. Rod Emmer of LSU.
•Three Evangeline Parish students were selected to attend the inauguration of President Bill Clinton in Washington D.C. The students chosen were Jessica Foret and Benjamin Whaley, both students at Sacred Heart High School, and Christi Toston, a former student of Ville Platte High School who transferred to the Louisiana School for Math, Science and the Arts in Natchitoches.
•Brown’s Furniture Store held a half-price with 12-month no interest sale on its entire stock.
•Sale items at Piggly Wiggly in Ville Platte included: leg quarters (29 cents/pound), four pound bag of Rainbow sugar ($1.39), Bonus Blend coffee (three 13 ounce packs/$5) and eggs (three two and a half dozen packs/$5).
•Sale items at A&P included: Donald Duck orange juice (64 ounce bottle/$1.19), bananas (three pounds/$1), boneless top sirloin steak ($3.49/pound), Bayer Select aspirin (two 24-count packs/$5) and five pound bag of Carmen Rice (99 cents).
•Popular movies released in January 1993 included: “Alive,” starring Ethan Hawke and Vincent Spano; “Leprechaun,” starring Warwick Davis and Jennifer Anniston; and “Body of Evidence,” starring Madonna and Willem Dafoe.
•Television shows that debuted in January 1993 included: “WWF’s Monday Night Raw,” with Vince McMahon, “Macho Man” Randy Savage and Rob Bartlett as match commentators; “Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman,” starring Jane Seymour and Joe Lando; and “Star Trek Deep Space Nine,” starring Avery Brooks and Rene’ Auberjonois.
•Popular songs of January 1993 included: “Hero,” by Mariah Carey; “I Would Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That),” by Meatloaf; “That’s the Way Love Goes,” by Janet Jackson; “Rock My World (Little Country Girl),” by Brooks and Dunn; and “Money in the Bank,” by John Anderson.
