This week is Mardi Gras and the beginning of the Lenten season. Also known as “Fat Tuesday,” people all over Louisiana look forward to the parades, parties, and chicken runs. The official colors of Mardi Gras for costumes are yellow for power, green for faith, and purple for justice.
What is Mardi Gras without a king cake? They go hand in hand. The king cake tradition is believed to have been brought over from France in the 1870’s. The rich dough is braided and baked. The top of the cake is covered with delicious sugar toppings in the traditional Mardi Gras colors.
Lent begins on Wednesday, March 2, while Easter is on April 16. Lent is a period of 40 days and begins on Ash Wednesday. It is a season of reflection and preparation before the celebration of Easter. It is a time of sacrifice. Good Friday is a day of fasting. Devout Catholics do not eat meat on Good Friday.
