The Village of Turkey Creek’s council spent time during its meeting Tuesday thanking Mayor Heather Cloud for her dedication and service to the community over the course of her two terms as mayor.
Councilman Joey Ducote said, “It has been a privilege working with you over the last eight years.”
Ducote went on to express his gratitude to Cloud for the work she has done starting Christmas in the Village in Turkey Creek and other activities such as racing at Lil Dega Speedway.
Council Member Neal King also thanked Mayor Cloud for her service to Turkey Creek by stating, “We have come together on good ideas and you have served this town greatly. I appreciate how you have served the people and appreciate you as a mayor.”
Following suit was Council Member Kurry Stewart, who shared, “I have served with four different mayors, and you have been the best mayor.”
Mayor Cloud then thanked the council for their words and shared what her two terms as mayor have taught her.
“I have gained nearly two decades of knowledge and understanding,” said Cloud. “I have learned many lessons, some of which have humbled me, and others that have taught me that you can grow from mistakes.”
She then gave advice to the incoming mayor, Phillip Cavins. Mayor Cloud said, “I believe you will take what we’ve done and grow it, but it will take time and a lot of energy.”
During the meeting, the council, Mayor Cloud and Mayor-elect Phillip Cavins discussed proposing an ordinance for the village’s appointed Chief of Police position.
The mayor-elect presented the council with a list of requirements and guidelines dealing with the chief of police position, which the council approved with the option to make adjustments.
Chasessica Basco, with Evangeline Parish 9-1-1, also addressed the council regarding the chief of police ordnance. She stated, “I have written policies like this for 9-1-1 and other municipalities so before you guys accept a final draft I just ask that you get with me so we can make sure nothing in your policy will conflict with the policy 9-1-1 already has in place since we dispatch for Turkey Creek.”
The council and mayor-elect agreed to have discussions with Basco in the near future on this topic to ensure the policies will not conflict with one another.
Turkey Creek is set to have a its officials sworn in to office on January 3, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. at the Turkey Creek Community Center.
