Louisiana public library usage continues to climb

BATON ROUGE — Public libraries in Louisiana recorded more than 10 million visits in 2023, marking double-digit growth over the prior year, newly released figures show, as libraries increased the number of programs offered, and the public used more Wi-Fi.

Free film screening is offered

BATON ROUGE — Louisiana Public Broadcasting, the East Baton Rouge Parish Library, and Indie Lens Pop-Up, presented by ITVS and INDEPENDENT LENS, will host a screening of Free For All: The Public Library, followed by a panel discussion and Q&A.

Sales tax rates increase as of Jan. 1

By: TONY MARKS Editor Starting Jan. 1, the state sales and use tax rate increased from 4.45% to 5.10%, according to information from the Evangeline Chamber of Commerce. The Louisiana Department of Revenue, in light of the tax increases, has released how Evangeline Parish will be affected.

Qualifying, other dates are set for March election

The qualification period for the March 29, 2025, election has been set. The qualifying period for candidates is January 29 - 31. Local and municipal candidates qualify with the clerk of court in the parish in which they are registered to vote (contact the clerk of court for office hours).

Guillory is elected chief of police

By: TONY MARKS Editor By almost a two vote to one difference, Shane Guillory was elected chief of police in Pine Prairie after a runoff election was held on Saturday, December 7. Guillory received 68% of the vote over his challenger, Gilbert J. Bordelon, who received 32% of the vote.
