MAMOU -- Coming into their key district showdown with Pine Prairie, the Mamou Lady Demons were sporting a perfect record in league play.
That perfect record does not exist anymore, as the Lady Panthers eased past Mamou for a huge 5-2 win.
With the win, the Lady Panthers are now 12-9 on the season and 6-2 in District 5-3A. Pine Prairie will step out of league play tomorrow when they travel to Deville to take on Buckeye. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
Mamou falls to 10-4 on the year with the loss and 6-1 in district play. The Lady Demons travel to Crowley on Tuesday. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
Pine Prairie did not waste any time getting on the scoreboard. The Lady Panthers picked up two important runs in their first at bat of the game.
Leadoff batter Maycie Hardy singled to start things off. Asia George drew a walk, putting runners at first and second.
A hard shot right back at Lady Demon pitcher Dacia Richard off of the bat of Jacie McFarlain was not fielded cleanly and gave the runners a chance for safe passage to their respective bags.
With the bases loaded, Kailey Soileau hit a deep shot into center field allowing Hardy to tag up at third and score. On the throw in, both George and McFarlain were able to advance a base.
A ground out to deep second base plated George and put runners at the corners. However, the Lady Panthers were unable to get any more runs home when Richard induced a pop-up to third base.
On their first offensive test in the bottom of the first, Mamou found the going tough, only getting one runner aboard. Pine Prairie starting pitcher Brianna Wall and the Lady Panther defense did their part in not allowing any type of momentum from the Lady Demons.
Pine Praire put together enough hits to scratch across another run in the top of the second inning. With two outs, Kaitlyn Fontenot doubled into deep left field. Hardy followed with a single, pushing Fontenot home giving the Lady Panthers a 3-0 lead.
Mamou countered in the bottom of the second, scoring a run of their own. Tierane Thomas ripped a pitch into center field for a single to lead off the inning.
Angel Menier followed with a single of her own to put runners at first and second with no outs. A deep fly ball into right field by Teralyn Fontenot gave Thomas’ pinch runner, Kaitee Bertrand the chance to tag up and reach third base.
A passed ball on the third strike with Sydney Bruney at the plate allowed Bertrand to score. From that point on, the Lady Panthers worked out of the jam and kept a one run advantage.
The third inning was a wash, as neither club could put up points. Pine Prairie picked up a single run in the top of the fourth when Abbie Fontenot belted a one out, one strike pitch over the left center wall to increase the Lady Panther lead to 4-1.
Over the next two innings, the Lady Demons found the going tough at the plate. The closest Mamou could get to scoring came in the bottom of the fifth when they had a runner at second base with one out.
Pine Prairie put the nail in the proverbial coffin in the top of the fifth, picking up run number
