Trojans pick up first game of series versus Blue Jays

The Sacred Heart Trojans triumphed over the St. Edmund Blue Jays 7-4 in the initial game of their first playoff series of the LHSAA Division IV playoff bracket.
Games two and, if necessary, three were played yesterday. The Gazette will have full coverage of those games in Thursday’s paper.
The Blue Jays had a promising start at the top of the first inning, getting runners on first and second base. A balk from Trojan starting pitcher Drew Bordelon sent the runners forward a base, but the Sacred Heart defense quickly shut down any hopes of a St. Edmund’s score.
Sacred Heart started off hot at the bottom of the first inning, with Wesley Launey singling to open things up. JT Harper flew out to right field to send Launey up one base, but giving himself up in the process.
Garret Fontenot was next up and singled, putting runners on first and third. A pass ball scored Launey and sent Garret Fontenot to all the wasy to third base.
Christian Duplechin singled, scoring Garret Fontenot. Gabe Fontenot singled, putting runners on first and second. A second passed ball moved each runner up one base.
Drew Bordelon singled, scoring Duplechin and sending Gabe Fontenot to third base. Eventually, the Blue Jay defense was able to string up a series of stops to bring the first inning to an end with the Trojans holding a 3-0 lead.
St. Edmunds continued to have trouble at the top of the second inning, as three quick outs sent out the Trojan offense.
In the bottom of the second, Launey once again started things off for Sacred Heart with a single. Harper walked to first, sending Launey to second.
Garret Fontenot singled, loading the bases. An error scored Launey and sent Duplechin to first, loading the bases once more. Gabe Fontenot grounded out to score Harper.
The Blue Jay defense was able to stop the Trojan run production after the two initial scores, sending the two teams into the third inning with Sacred Heart on top 5-0.
St. Edmunds came into the third inning looking completely revitalized. With one out, Carter LeJune singled to re-energize the Blue Jay offense. Brock Bieber walked and Brad Miller singled to load the bases.
A passed ball scored LeJune and set runners on second and third base. Dawson Ardoin singled, scoring both Bieber and Miller.
Sacred Heart switched out pitchers after, sending Gabe Fontenot to the mound, where he shut out the Blue Jays for the rest of the inning.
At the bottom of the third inning and in the fourth inning, neither team could find their footing at the plate. Both teams looked to recover in the fifth inning with Sacred Heart still holding a 5-3 lead.
Lejune started things off for St. Edmund with a single. A passed ball sent Lejune to second and a ground ball by Bieber sent Lejune to third. Miller singled to score Lejune. The Trojans were able to put a stop to the Blue Jay offense after Lejune’s run.
Connor Bordelon doubled to start the bottom of the fifth inning. Cade Manuel sacrficed himself to send Connor Bordelon to third.
Alec Gotro sent a fly ball out to left field, allowing Connor Bordelon to tag up and score. The Trojans were shut down after their initial score, opening up the sixth inning on top 6-4.
St. Edmunds continued to struggle at the top of the sixth inning, with three quick outs sending Sacred Heart back to the plate.
Two quick outs to start off the Trojan’s offensive series looked like it would lead to another unsuccessful inning, but an error allowed Gabe Fontenot to take the first base. Fontenot proceeded to steal second base as well. Drew Bordelon doubled to score Gabe Fontenot.
St. Edmunds couldn’t muster up anything at the plate in the final inning, closing out the first of a possible three game series.
