VILLE PLATTE -- So far this week, the Sacred Heart baseball team is dead even in terms of wins and losses, as they picked up a 6-3 victory at home against Bunkie on Monday and lost a tough 2-1 decision on the road to South Beauregard on Tuesday afternoon.
With the split, the Trojans are now 3-2 on the young season and are scheduled to play at North Vermilion today. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
The win over Bunkie was the second one over the Panthers in the past four days, as Sacred Heart blasted Bunkie 13-3 last Thursday.
In Monday’s game, the Trojans fell behind early 1-0, but was able to pick up multiple runs in three of their six at bats and hold off a late charge from Bunkie for the win.
The Panthers got on the board in the top of the first inning. An error gave Nick Clark a free base. Clark advanced to third base on consecutive ground outs and then scored on a two out error to put the Bunkie up 1-0.
Sacred Heart responded in the bottom of the first with two quick runs. A single and a stolen base by lead off batter JT Harper, put the junior center fielder at second base.
After Wesley Launey popped out to first base, catcher Garrett Fontenot singled, putting runners at first and third with one out. Clean up batter, Christian Duplechin took a 1-2 pitch and promptly doubled into right center field, scoring both Harper and Fontenot.
The next two Trojan batters grounded out, but Sacred Heart now held a 2-1 lead.
Starting pitcher Cannon Beaver settled in over the next four innings, holding the Panthers to no runs on four hits and one walk.
The Trojans added to their lead in the bottom of the second. Cade Manuel drew a one out walk and found himself at third base on a Drew Bordelon single.
Harper struck out and Launey followed with a single, scoring Manuel. Fontenot picked up his second RBI of the game, singling in Bordelon to make the score 4-1.
Sacred Heart completed its scoring in the top of the fourth. With one out, Harper tripled and scored on a fielder’s choice off of the bat of Launey. Fontenot struck out, but Duplechin was able to pick up Launey with a single to right field.
Bunkie made a run at the Trojans in the top of the seventh. Two walks, an error, and a passed ball gave the Panthers two unearned runs to start the inning. However, Sacred Heart was able to shut down the attempted comeback and finish with the win.
Fontenot was three for four with two RBI to lead the Trojans at the plate. Duplechin went two for three and added three RBI, while Harper was two for four with two runs scored.
Beaver went five complete innings, allowing no earned runs. He gave up only three hits and struck out five, while surrendering one walk.
On Tuesday, the Trojans could not get the hit needed at the right time and lost in the final inning to a good South Beauregard team.
Both teams could not muster much offense in the first inning of play, as the Trojans and the Knights were only able to get one runner apiece to reach first base.
Sacred Heart did get a runner to third base in top of the second but could not get him across the plate before the third out.
South Beauregard drew first blood, scoring a run in the bottom of the second. Leland Broussard singled to lead things off for the Knights and reached third base after consecutive ground outs.
With the count 3-2 on Cohen Gray, a passed ball allowed Broussard to score the first run of the game.
It would not be until the sixth inning before the Trojans could tie things up. Garrett Fontenot drew a one out walk and reached second base on a ground out and touched third base on a passed ball. An error on the South Beauregard defense off of Alec Gotro’s bat, allowed Fontenot to tie the game up at 1-1.
The Knights completed the win in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs already recorded, Collin Langley reached first on a walk and got into scoring position on a stolen base.
Going back to the top of the line-up, Wyatt Beasley stroked a 3-2 pitch into center field, plating Langley and giving South Beauregard a one run win over the Trojans.
