VILLE PLATTE -- In the battle for Trojan dominance, the Sacred Heart Trojans and Lady Trojans both gave valiant efforts but just could not sneak past the East Beauregard Trojans and Lady Trojans here Thursday night.
In the opening contest, the Sacred Heart Lady Trojans’ eight point deficit after one quarter of play was too much to overcome as they fell to East Beauregard 45-30.
With the loss the Lady Trojans drop to 3-10 on the season and were scheduled to play Notre Dame on Friday night.
In the nightcap game that followed, the Sacred Heart Trojans kept pace with East Beauregard throughout the game, but did not have enough juice in the end and lost a close 55-49 contest.
Sacred Heart is now 3-11 on the season after the defeat and were scheduled to play Notre Dame also on Friday night.
The first battle of the night saw East Beauregard jump out to an 8-2 lead over Sacred Heart after the first 3:13 of the game, thanks in part to two three-point shots by Karli Bullock.
Sacred Heart tried to battle back, picking up two more baskets from Blaire Lafleur. However, Bullock was able to knock down two more from beyond the arc to bring East Beauregard’s lead to 14-6 as the initial period came to a close.
A three-point basket by Sacred Heart’s Anna Beth Briley right out of the chute in the second quarter cut the East Beauregard advantage down to five points. East Beauregard was able to respond, going to the line on their next three possessions, including part of a three-point play to bring their lead to 18-9 at the 5:21 mark.
The two teams exchanged baskets for the remaining time in the second period. As the half came to a close, East Beauregard owned a 10 point lead, 24-14.
East Beauregard began the third quarter going on a 6-2 run, putting them up by 14 with 3:38 to go in the quarter. Sacred Heart’s Jenna McFarlain knocked down a three-point basket at the 3:11 mark, however, East Beauregared answered with a three-pointer of their own and finished out the period owning a 36-23 lead.
The final quarter followed the same pattern as the previous three quarters, with Sacred Heart trying to hack away at the East Beauregard lead. Never-the-less, the visting Lady Trojans from Beauregard Parish did not allow Sacred Heart to get closer than 12 points the entire period.
Lauren Shipp and McFarlain both ended the night with 11 points to lead Sacred Heart.
The boy’s game flowed a little differently than the previous contest. East Beauregard did jump out to an early 4-0 lead in the first 1:23, but Sacred Heart managed to overtake the team in columbia blue by reeling off seven unaswered points, including five from Tanner Bergeron, over the next 1:05.
East Beauregard tied the game up a 7-7 on a three-point basket, but Sacred Heart would regain a four point edge with back-to-back buckets. Over the last 2:22 of the period, East Beauregard was able to get to the free throw line and move past Sacred Heart to procure a 13-11 lead as the horn sounded to end the first period.
Points were hard to come by at the start of the second quarter, with only Sacred Heart picking up any in the opening 2:50 of the period. A three-point basket by Jacques Leger and a two-point bucket out of the hands of Bryce Deville put the hometown Trojans up 16-13 with 5:10 to go in the quarter.
After a two-point basket from East Beauregard, Leger and Gabe Courville knocked down back-to-back three-point buckets to give Sacred Heart a 22-15 lead with 2:14 left. However, East Beauregard would not go away easily, responding with an 8-0 run to close out the quarter.
An action filled third quarter led to several lead changes. Sacred Heart went back up on top 27-24 at the 6:05 mark of the period. That changed over the next two minutes, as East Beauregard found a way to ease past Sacred Heart and take a 32-30 lead.
For the remaing four minutes of the period, the two clubs traded points. When the buzzer sounded to end the quarter, East Beauregard held a two-point advantage, 39-37.
Using a more aggressive offensive philosophy to begin the fourth quarter, East Beauregard managed to open up a five point lead, 44-39, at the 4:37 mark. From that point on, the visiting Trojans kept Sacred Heart at bay and never allowed them to get closer than four points the reamainder of the game.
Leger scored 16 points to lead Sacred Heart on the night.
