VILLE PLATTE -- “Patience is a virtue”, says the ancient poem by William Langland.
Taking on that sentiment, the Sharknado walked their way to an 8-3 win over the Thunder in a Ville Platte Girl’s Softball Association game this past Thursday at the Ville Platte/Evangeline Recreational Complex.
The Sharknado’s patience allowed them to draw 11 walks in the game. Meanwhile, after surrendering three runs in the first inning, Sharknado starting pitcher Layla Fontenot settled down to hold the Thunder scoreless over the next two innings.
Batting first in the contest, the Thunder showed some patience of their own. Janiah Leday led the contest off with a walk.
A wild pitch sent Leday to second base. Emma Parrott delivered a single to the outfield, putting runners at the corners.
Parrott took second base uncontested. Another wild pitch pushed Leday across the plate for the first run of the game and put Parrott at third base.
The big hit of the game for the Thunder came next when Morgan Tezeno blasted a ball deep into right center field, scoring Parrott. The combination of Tezeno’s speed and the slow throw in from the outfield allowed Tezeno to touch every bag and home plate putting the Thunder up 3-0
The Thunder threatened later in the inning when Cameron Charlie walked and moved to second on a catcher’s interference call with Marli Rider at the plate. However, Fontenot got a ground out and a strike out to end the at bat for the Thunder.
The Sharknado responded by plating four runs in the bottom of the first. Maci Droddy started the inning off with a walk.
On her attempt to steal second base, the throw down from the catcher went awry, giving Droddy the ability to come all the way to the plate.
Lille Latour followed with a walk of her own. Latour stole second base and was joined on the bags by Millie Richard who induced another walk.
A wild pitch put the runners at second and third. Fontenot walked to load the bases.
A chopper right back to the pitcher brought Latour home, moved Richard to third and Fontenot to second. A wild pitch scored Richard and pushed Fontenot to third base.
Maci Estillette walked and took second base uncontested. Another wild pitch plated Fontenot, giving the Sharknado the maximum four runs that can be scored in an at bat and made it a 4-3 contest.
Fontenot turned right around and sent all three Thunder batters back to the dugout in the top of the second inning.
The Sharknado matched their four runs in the bottom of the second to make it an 8-3 game. Fontenot and the Sharknado defense once again rose to the occasion, retiring the side in the top of the third.
With that, time expired in the game, allowing the Sharknado to come away with the win.
