VILLE PLATTE -- In District 5-1A action here Friday night, the Sacred Heart Trojans and Lady Trojans hosted False River with the hopes of gaining momentum in the young district season.
The opening game between the Lady Trojans and the Lady Gators was well played by both teams, but unfortunately the home team could not finish what they started in a 47-41 loss.
In the boy’s contest, False River was able to jump out to a quick lead and sustain it throughout the contest, as the Trojans fell to the Gators 70-45.
The games fired off pretty quickly as the Lady Trojans displayed their dominance on the court for the entire first quarter. Sacred Heart hit numerous shots only to have the opposing team score a single point, giving the Lady Trojans a commanding 10-1 lead as the period came to a close.
Sacred Heart began the second quarter by widening their lead, hitting the first four points of the period. After the first three minutes of play had elapsed, the Lady Gators proved that they were not down for the count as they went on a 14-4 run in the final five minutes of the first half. As the buzzer sounded to end the second quarter, the Lady Trojans found themselves struggling to keep control.
As the second half got underway, the two teams really started to show full effort as they continued to fight it out on the court. As the scores rose so did the tension. Suddenly, with two minutes remaining in the quarter, False River took the lead for the first time in the game, 29-28, and held a 33-30 advantage going into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter consisted of multiple control swaps as Sacred Heart took the lead 34-33 with 6:30 left to go in the game. The Lady Gators were finally able to seize the game on a basket with 1:30 showing on the clock.
Blair Lafleur led all Lady Trojans with 14 points.
In the boy’s game, False River gained control of the ball at the jump and immediately landed a basket in the first 15 seconds. The Gators would stretch that lead to 6-0, before Sacred Heart finally found the basket.
The Trojans fought hard the entire quarter, but found themselves at the bottom of a 16-6 score when the quarter came to an end.
The second quarter mirrored the first, as Sacred Heart still struggled to keep up with the pace of False River. The Trojans never seemed to be able to gain any offensive ground throughout the entire period, as they stayed behind by double digits as time ran down in the first half.
When the horn sounded to head to the locker room, False River owned a 35-22 lead.
After half time the Trojans came back on to the court ready to fight. As the third quarter continued to develop the Trojans efforts were on display as they went on to score 15 points in the period, while holding False River to a total of 13 points.
Unfortunately, the efforts of Sacred Heart could not compete with the tenacity of the Gators, as False River completely dominated the period, out scoring the Trojans 19-8.
Jack Lahaye led the way for Sacred Heart with 14 points.
