Sacred Heart rolls past Catholic, P.C. for district wins

VILLE PLATTE -- The Sacred Heart Trojans and Lady Trojans swept the Catholic of Pointe Coupee Hornets and Lady Hornets Friday night, with both Sacred Heart squads picking up district wins.
The Lady Trojans controlled the Lady Hornets from minute one, never holding less than a nine point lead at the end of each period, to pick up a clean 52-31 victory.
Sacred Heart finishes their season with an 8-16 record and 5-5 in district play.
The Trojans came out on top against the Hornets in a close outing until the end, pulling away with a 42-34 win.
Sacred Heart improves to 8-17 on the season and 5-5 in district play. They will travel to Northside Christian Tuesday for their final game of the season.
The Lady Hornets were the first to score in the initial game, sinking in a lay up one and a half minutes into to the game. After two quick two point baskets from Sacred Heart’s Lauren Shipp, Catholic was able to answer back with a three point basket of their own. This was the last lead the Lady Hornets would have for the remainder of the game. The Lady Trojans went on a tear following the score, sinking in 10 points unanswered to close out the period with a 14-5 lead.
Catholic saw more success in the second quarter, but Sacred Heart still managed to keep ahead on the scoreboard. The Lady Trojans were able to out score the Lady Hornets 14-12 to close out the first half.
The third period was mainly a wash as neither team could come up with an advantage. Both teams ended up scoring 10 points, with the Lady Trojans holding a 38-27 lead heading into the final period.
The fourth period started off relatively slow. Both teams had scored four points to put the score at 42-31 with 4:04 left in the quarter. Just then, the Lady Trojans decided to put the game away, scoring 10 unanswered points to close out the game at 52-31.
Shipp led the way for the Lady Trojans with 14 points while Amanda Bergeron and Blair Lafleur pitched in 13 points each.
The boys began their game with a surprisingly slow start. Both teams were largely feeling each other out in the first period, not focusing too much on the score board. As the first quarter came to an end, the Hornets held a 5-4 advantage.
The two teams managed to pick up the pace in the second period, nearly quadrupling the score of the first. The clubs went back and forth, with the Trojans being the only team able to score twice in a row. It was all tied up at 17-17 as the two teams headed into the locker rooms.The third period saw Sacred Heart starting to gain the upper hand. The Trojans’ efficiency was beginning to take a toll on the Hornets, who were struggling to keep up. Sacred Heart out scored Catholic 14-9 to put the Trojans up 29-26 going into the final period.
