Sacred Heart picks up regional round win over St. Fred’s

VILLE PLATTE -- For the first time since 2015, the Sacred Heart Lady Trojans will make an appearance at the Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Softball State Tournament after they defeated the St. Frederick Lady Warriors 8-2 Friday afternoon in the regional round of the Division IV playoffs.
The No. 5 seeded Lady Trojans will now face off against the No. 1 Cedar Creek Lady Cougars on Thursday. The Lady Cougars defeated St. Ed’s 14-0 to advance on to Sulphur. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
Sacred Heart, behind starting pitcher Camille Fontenot, shut down the St. Frederick offense in the top of the first inning, allowing only one base runner.
The Lady Trojans got on the board in the bottom of the first by plating a single run. Sydnie Soileau singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Emilyse Bergeron.
An error on the Lady Warrior defense put Olivia Hernandez at first base and, more importantly, moved Soileau up to third base. Karli Fontenot drove a ball into deep left field, allowing Soileau to tag up for the first run of the game.
Sacred Heart added to the lead in the bottom of the second when the Lady Trojans tacked on two more runs.
Camille Soileau doubled to lead off the inning. After a fly ball out, Lauren Shipp and Natalie LeBas both drew one out walks to load the bases.
Sydnie Soileau grounded to Petrus at third base, who flipped it to home plate to get Soileau for the second out.
But, Bergeron did not let the inning die there, as she doubled home both Shipp and LeBas to give the Lady Trojans the 3-0 lead.
Sacred Heart went up 4-0 in the bottom of the third, plating another run to widen the lead.
Karli Fontenot singled to start the at bat going. A fly ball and a strike out followed. With two outs, Camille Fontenot doubled into right-center field bringing Karli Fontenot home.
St. Frederick picked up a run in the top of the fourth to cut into the Lady Trojan advantage. However, Sacred Heart would answer right back in the bottom of the fourth with a run of their own.
With one out, Sydnie Soileau reached on a fielder’s choice. A pop up to the center fielder made it two away. Hernandez got the St. Frederick defense to commit an error that allowed Sydnie Soileau to score.
The final runs of the game for the Lady Trojans came in the bottom of the fifth. Tobie Landry doubled and reached third on a single from Camille Soileau. Landry would come home on a sacrifice fly off of the bat of Camille Fontenot.
Lauren Shipp followed with a double, plating Soileau. After a strike out, Emilyse Bergeron singled home Shipp to put the score at 8-1.
The Lady Warriors added their final run in the top of the seventh, but it was too little, too late, as Aubrey Foret sealed the win in relief of Camille Fontenot.
Camille Soileau led the way, going 2-for-4.
