MAURICE -- A trip to Maurice to face the North Vermilion Patriots awaited the Sacred Heart Trojans on Thursday afternoon.
What was not expected by both the Trojans and the Patriots was a suspended game due to darkness with the game tied at 5-5.
The two teams battled until the completion of the eighth inning of play, but could not determine a winner when the playing conditions became too risky to continue. As of press time, the game was scheduled to resume on Friday, when North Vermilion traveled to Ville Platte to face Sacred Heart in game two of a three game series between the two schools.
The Gazette will have full coverage of the conclusion of game one as well as the other two games in Thursday’s edition.
Sacred Heart took an early 1-0 lead after their first at bat. Lead off batter JT Harper singled to get things started. An error with Wesley Launey at the plate and a stolen base moved Harper to third base. Two batters later, Alec Gotro flied out to center field, allowing Harper to tag up and score.
Neither team was able to get on the board in the next two innings that followed. However, the Patriots tied the game in the bottom of the fourth and took a 3-1 lead after five innings of play.
Sacred Heart countered with three big runs in the top of the sixth, only to have North Vermilion tie the game again at 4-4 with a solo run in the bottom half of the inning.
After a scoreless seventh inning, each team picked up a single run in the eight inning. At that point the umpires determined that the game was un-playable because of darkness.
