Sacred Heart girls pull off win; boys drop close one

VILLE PLATTE -- The Sacred Heart Lady Trojans and Trojans tag teamed the Westminster Crusaders and Lady Crusaders Tuesday night. The Lady Trojans were able to pull ahead towards the end of their game, securing a 53-30 win. The Trojans kept things close, but failed to come through with a win, falling 61-20 to the Crusaders.
The Lady Trojans improve to 9-12 on the season with their victory. The Trojans fall to 5-17 on the season with the loss.
The two squads did not take very long to get things started, with both showing impressive defensive capabilities. Despite the defensive performance of both teams, Sacred Heart was able to keep up, but still faced a 12-11 deficit as the first period wound to a close.
In the second period, it was Sacred Heart’s defense that held the clear advantage, stealing the ball a whopping 12 times. That defensive effort allowed the Lady Trojans to own a 23-17 at the end of the first half.
Sacred Heart started to pull away from Westminster in the third period. Blair Lafleur’s eight points was the driving force that eventually pulled Sacred Heart ahead of Westminster. 36-22 as the third quarter came to a close.
Sacred Heart drove the nail in the coffin right at the start of the fourth quarter, pumping out 13 points, including another eight points from Lafleur.That lead held until the final minutes, as the Lady Trojans closed out with a 53-30 win.
Lafleur lit up the scoreboard for the Lady Trojans with a whopping 23 points.
The start of the boys game did not look great for the Trojans. Right from the beginning, Westminster took a 8-0 lead with 4:47 on the clock. The Crusaders then seemed to get overconfident, allowing the Trojans to crawl their way back into the game and tie the contest up 13-13 at the end of the first period.
The Crusaders were once again able to gain an early six point lead over the first 2:24 of the second quarter. Westminster, once again failed to keep up the same intensity, giving the Trojans a way back into the game.
Sacred Heart was eventually able to tie things up at 21-21 with 2:47 remaining in the first half. The remainder of the time was fairly back and forth, but Westminster inched out a 28-26 advantage before the half came to a close.
Westminster started off strong yet again in the third period, gaining a 12 point lead with 3:07 remaining in the period. Even though they were unable to tie things up, the Trojans still were able to close the gap to 44-39 before the quarter ended.
The Trojans kept up with the Crusaders in the fourth quarter, going score for score. This didn’t benefit the Trojans however, who were still down by five points with 1:30 remaining in the game.
Sacred Heart lost steam in the final minute of the period, allowing Westminster to out-score the Trojans 8-2, leaving the Sacred Heart squad noticeably frustrated at the end of the game.
Bryce Deville kept his Trojans in the game with an impressive 16 points.
